POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Safety leads corporate initiatives to ensure a safe working environment for all Haynes Associates and strengthen our culture of Safety by Choice. This position involves developing, implementing and overseeing the safety policies, procedures and training programs for all field and office staff. This role ensures compliance with OSHA and all federal, state, and local regulations while fostering a proactive safety mindset and individual ownership of safe operating practices. The Director of Safety will collaborate with other departmental leaders to drive continuous improvement in safety across all Haynes locations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This job description gives an overview of the overall essential functions, competencies, skills, and abilities for the Director of Safety role. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned:
Program Development and Compliance
- Maintain and continuously improve the company’s written safety policies, including the company Safety Manual, site specific safety plans, job hazard analyses (JHAs)
- Ensure compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910 (General Industry) and 29 CFR 1926 (Construction) standards
- Maintain and administer programs for lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fall protection, hot work, respiratory protection, and electrical safety (NFPA 70E)
- Stay current on regulatory changes and update company policies accordingly
Field Operations & Site Safety
- Encourage and reinforce positive safety behaviors (such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), safeguarding machinery, maximizing fall protection)
- Conduct regular job site safety audits and inspections (scheduled as well as unannounced); provide positive reinforcement, coaching, or corrective action as necessary
- Regularly inspect company-provided rigging, ladders, lifts, and other tools; remove unsafe devices from the inventory
- Perform incident investigations when accidents or injuries occur; conduct a root cause analyses and collaborate with leaders on corrective actions and/or policy changes
- Review and approve site-specific safety plans required by general contractors and building owners
- Engage with clients as requested by operations, sales, or the client themselves; these interactions should reinforce the value Haynes provides, our mission of growing and retaining our maintenance base
- Coordinate safety requirements for work in occupied buildings (such as hospitals, data centers, schools, and commercial offices)
Training & Culture
- Develop and deliver safety training programs, including new hire orientation, toolbox talks, and annual refresher training including annual Safety Jam
- Coordinate OSHA 10- and 30- hour training for field personnel
- Administer first aid/CPR.AED certification programs
- Arrange specialized training as operational needs arise
- Lead the Safety Committee and drive employee engagement in safety initiatives
- Track and maintain digital training records and certifications for all field Associates
Administration & Risk Management
- Keep documentation up to date and ensure accident/incident reports are filed consistently and timely when injuries and hazards occur
- Maintain OSHA 300/300A/301 logs and manage annual posting and electronic submission requirements
- Track and report safety KPIs, including EMR, TRIR, DART rate and near-miss data
- Support pre-qualification submissions (ISNetworld, Avetta, Veriforce, etc.) for general contractors and owners
- Work with Director of Human Resources to manage worker’s compensation claims and an effective return to work program, collaborating with insurance broker as necessary
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Able to lift 75 lbs from floor to waist with possible repetition
- Able to lift 50 lbs from shoulder to overhead
- Able to work with both arms above head for a minimum of 5 minutes
- Able to carry 50 lbs for a distance of 25 feet
- Able to push or pull 125 for a distance of 150 feet
- Able to climb stairs and ladders
- Able to carry 30 lbs while climbing stairs or a ladder
- Able to grip and operate hand tools, power tools, and safety equipment, such as chain falls
- Able to lift legs and step over obstacles up to 19 inches above the ground
- Able to perform work while in varying physical positions, such as lying on side, in a kneeling position, while standing on a ladder
- Able to access rooftop units and work at heights and in some cases tight or enclosed spaces
- Able to wear a respirator if conditions require; may have exposure to potentially harmful chemicals or materials
- Able to crawl for a distance of 25 feet
- Able to stoop, squat, or kneel for up to 10 minutes at a time
- Vision: Correctable to 20/20 with no color blindness
- Hearing: Correctable to normal range
Compensation:
$130,000-$160,000 per year
