THE DEPARTMENT:

New Student Programs and Family Engagement is responsible forpreparing entering students for academic and personal success byproviding an effective transition to the university from the pointof admission through the end of the students' first year. NewStudent Programs and Family Engagement provides information,communications, and services to incoming students and their supportsystem to orient them to the traditions, mission, philosophy, andculture of the campus and to make them knowledgeable about Cal PolyPomona's opportunities, resources, challenges, and programs. NewStudent Programs and Family Engagement designs, plans, implements,and assesses mandatory online and in-person orientation events, aswell as the ongoing engagement of family members and supportersthroughout the academic year. The position will bring togetherexisting decentralized institutional programs, services andactivities for parents and families under one functionaladministrative structure to ensure optimum coordination andresource management, timely response and referral andidentification of additional opportunities to enhance parent/familyrelations and outreach. New Student Programs and Family Engagementserves as the administrative office for the mandatory studentorientation programs, parent/family orientation, and parent/familycommunication. The office is responsible for compliance withfederal, state, CSU System, and University requirements and thetimely and accurate dissemination of information to students,parents, families, supporters, and campus constituents. New StudentPrograms and Family Engagement is housed within the Division ofStudent Affairs and is part of the Student Experience cluster thatreports to the Director of New Student Programs and FamilyEngagement. New Student Programs and Family Engagement workscollaboratively with campus partners in support of enrollmentmanagement goals, student success and retention, equity andbelonging, and institutional planning efforts. The Division ofStudent Affairs strives for excellence through a sharedstudent-centered philosophy and values of collaboration,inclusivity, integrity, innovation, and student-centeredness. Inperforming the duties assigned to this position, the incumbent isexpected to consistently demonstrate attitudes and behaviors thatare in keeping with the division's philosophy and values.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Leader Development & Program Leadership Coordinate the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and trainingof approximately 40 Orientation Captains and OrientationLeaders. Recommend student employees for hire and, when necessary,recommend appropriate corrective action or separation inconsultation with the Senior Coordinator and Director. Develop and implement training that prepares student leaders tosupport incoming students and families during orientation andtransition programs. Develop student staff work schedules and assign duties based onorientation and program needs. Provide day-to-day work direction, coaching, feedback, andclarification of performance and conduct expectations. Monitor student staff performance and provide input intoperformance evaluations in accordance with department anduniversity practices. Develop learning opportunities for studentleaders in areas such as communication, conflict resolution, peersupport, student wellbeing, customer service, campus resources, andreferral practices. Evaluate the effectiveness of student‑leader training andrecommend improvements based on program needs and assessmentresults. Orientation and Transition Planning & Implementation Plan and coordinate orientation and transition programs incollaboration with the Senior Coordinator, Director, and campuspartners. Develop program learning outcomes, activities, and assessmentstrategies that support incoming students' transition to theuniversity. Coordinate New Student Convocation, welcome activities, andother transition experiences, including program logistics, campuspartnerships, communications, and implementation. Analyze participant feedback, program assessment results, andidentified student needs to recommend improvements to orientationand transition programming. Research and recommend student engagement activities thatsupport peer connection, belonging, student success, and continuedtransition throughout the first year. Serve as a program lead during assigned orientation andtransition programs, coordinating student staff and addressingoperational or student-service issues within establishedguidelines. Collaborate with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, colleges,and other university departments to coordinate information,resources, and services for incoming students. New Student Enrollment Support Provide information and guidance to incoming students regardingorientation, transition, and enrollment-related processes. Identify the nature of student concerns, explain applicableuniversity processes and requirements, and assist students inidentifying appropriate resources and available courses ofaction. Refer students to academic advising, enrollment services,student support programs, or other campus resources asappropriate. Collaborate with Academic Affairs, college advising units, andother campus partners to address recurring orientation andtransition-related student issues. Administrative Support Perform administrative tasks related to orientation leadersupervision and orientation program planning, including roomreservations, procurement card reconciliation, IT Security/ATIreview requests, purchase order requisitions, and budget ledgerentries. Student Affairs/University Committees Represent New Student Programs and Family Engagement on avariety of divisional and campus-wide committees. Graduate Intern Management In partnership with other professional staff, recruit,interview, recommend for hire, train, and provide work direction toseasonal graduate student interns. Provide task direction, work assignments, performance feedback,and clarification of conduct expectations; recommend appropriatecorrective action in consultation with professional staff asneeded. Ensure graduate interns execute their responsibilitiesappropriately and effectively as representatives of the department,division, and university. Ensure graduate interns follow university employment guidelinesand comply with labor law.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree - Equivalent to graduation from a four-yearcollege or university in a related field, including or supplementedby upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques,interviewing, and conflict resolution where such arejob-related. Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typicallydemonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressivelyresponsible professional student services work experience. One yearin the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is notrequired. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, SocialWork, or a directly related field may be substituted for one yearof experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship orclinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted forthe three years of experience for positions with a majorresponsibility for professional career or personal counseling. Driver's license, Valid and in State Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and groupbehavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends ofthe Student Services field as well as general knowledge of thepolicies, procedures, and practices of the program area to whichassigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques;general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire suchknowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of thespecific campus to which the position is assigned. Workingknowledge of student services programs outside the program to whichimmediately assigned. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopteffective courses of action; advise students individually and ingroups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriatecourses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engagedwith individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative orsensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions andexplanations of problems brought forward by individuals or studentorganizations, analyze and define the problem, draw validconclusions and project consequences of various alternative coursesof action; carry out a variety of professionally complexassignments without detailed instructions; and establish andmaintain cooperative working relationships with a varietyofindividuals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in higher education, student affairs,counseling, education, or a related field. Experience coordinating orientation, transition, studentsuccess, or related Student Services programs. Experience training and providing work direction to studentemployees or peer leaders. Experience with program planning, event coordination,assessment, and evaluation. Knowledge of student development andlearning theory as related to student transition and studentsuccess. Experience collaborating with multiple departments or campuspartners to coordinate student programs and services. Strong written, oral, interpersonal, andproblem-solving skills. Knowledge of university academic and enrollment processes andpolicies. CSU Classification Salary Range This position is part of the APC bargaining unit 4. The CSUClassification Standards for this position are located on CSU Classification Standards website. The classification salary rangefor this position according to the respective skill level is:minimum $5,540 and maximum $7,893 per month.
