Municipal Services & Operations Field Technician Specialist Maintenance

The Municipal Services & Operations Field Technician Specialist Maintenance plays a vital role in keeping the City of Lawrence's wastewater treatment systems operating safely and reliably. This position is well-suited for experienced technicians or individuals seeking a hands-on career in a stable, technical, and meaningful field. The role focuses on maintaining and troubleshooting process equipment, supporting system upgrades, and ensuring continuous and compliant plant operations. Technicians in this role contribute directly to protecting public health, environmental quality, and essential city infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of process equipment at wastewater treatment plants and pump stations; electrical, HVAC, pumps and motors.
• Perform preventive maintenance and technical evaluations to keep systems operating efficiently and within regulatory requirements.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation issues using technical knowledge and diagnostic tools.
• Support and oversee contractors performing work on facility equipment and infrastructure.
• Assist with equipment performance assessments and asset management tasks.
• Participate in system upgrades and capital improvements by reviewing plans, coordinating installations, and providing technical input.
• Operate heavy equipment, tools, vehicles, and HVAC systems as needed.
• Respond to emergency or after-hours issues to maintain continuous 24/7 plant operations.
• Maintain safe work practices, follow safety procedures, and help ensure a clean and organized working environment.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Technical background in maintenance, mechanical systems, electrical systems, HVAC or related fields preferred.
• One year of training in chemistry, biology, maintenance, electrical, mechanical, process automation, treatment operations, engineering, technology, industrial maintenance, or one year of direct wastewater treatment plant experience preferred.
• Ability to diagnose equipment issues, read technical materials, and adapt to new technologies and systems.
• Must hold a valid Kansas driver's license and be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Must have or be able to obtain an ABC Class III Maintenance certification within one year.
• Ability to work in varying weather conditions, perform physical tasks, and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
• Strong problem-solving abilities, mechanical aptitude, and willingness to learn and grow in a specialized field.
