Title : Construction Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) Location : Dayton, OH Duration : 2 Years (Start: 9/28) Type : 1099 Contractor Pay Rate : $49/hr Per Diem : None Completion Bonus : $150/month Pay Frequency : Weekly Schedule : Monday-Friday, 8-Hour Days Long-Term Project Join a contractor supporting a long-term federal construction project in Dayton, OH. This role offers the opportunity to serve as the project's Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO), overseeing safety activities involving excavation, underground utilities, heavy equipment operations, public protection, and contractor compliance with federal construction safety requirements. This position is ideal for a safety professional with experience on civil infrastructure or federal construction projects who enjoys maintaining a strong field presence while ensuring safe execution of high-risk construction activities. Required Qualifications OSHA 30 Construction Certification 5+ years of construction safety experience Experience supporting excavation and underground utility construction Experience conducting site inspections, audits, and compliance monitoring Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and contractor safety management Ability to work in an active civil construction environment Preferred Qualifications Previous SSHO experience EM 385-1-1 experience USACE or other federal construction project experience Competent Person for Excavation & Trenching CHST, ASP, CSP, or other BCSP credential What You'll Be Doing Oversee daily safety activities for civil construction operations Conduct routine site inspections, audits, and risk assessments Monitor excavation, trenching, and underground utility activities Support heavy equipment operations and material handling activities Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, project safety requirements and federal construction standards Lead incident investigations and corrective action implementation Review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), excavation permits, and pre‑task plans Maintain safety documentation, reports and compliance records Coordinate public protection measures and work zone safety Partner with project supervision to proactively identify and mitigate hazards Promote a positive safety culture across the project Technical Knowledge OSHA Construction Standards Excavation & Trenching Safety Heavy Equipment Operations Underground Utility Construction Utility Protection & Damage Prevention Public Work Zone Safety Federal Construction Safety Requirements Contractor Safety Management Fall Protection & Elevated Work Activities Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) Development Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis Construction Risk Assessment & Mitigation What Success Looks Like The ideal candidate is a field‑focused SSHO who can effectively coordinate contractors, proactively identify hazards, maintain compliance with federal safety requirements, and support the safe execution of excavation and civil construction activities while protecting both workers and the public.
