Teaching Artist - Pianist/Chorus Assistant for The Hunts Point Children’s Shakespeare Ensemble (HPCSE) Theatre for a New Audience New York, NY US DESCRIPTION Position: Teaching Artist - Pianist/Chorus Assistant for The Hunts Point Children’s Shakespeare Ensemble (HPCSE) Reports to: TFANA Co-Director of HPCSE, with oversight from TFANA Education Director FLSA Status: Part time/Seasonal Location: Hunts Point, Bronx, NY 10474 Compensation: $60/hr Schedule/Hours: Program sessions occur in person in the Bronx on the following schedule from Sept. 2026 through May 2027: Sept-Dec 2026 (Approximately 3 hours/week) Thursdays: 3:00-6:00pm Jan-Feb 2027 (Approximately 6 hours/week) Tuesdays/Thursdays: 3:00-6:00pm Mar-May 2027 (Approximately 11 hours/week) Tuesdays/Thursdays: 3:00-6:00pm Saturdays: 11:30am-4:30pm Additional Rehearsal Weeks (Approximately 10 hours/week) February 15-19, 2027: 10:00am - 4:00pm April 22-30, 2027: 10:00am - 4:00pm Tech/Performance Week (Approximately 25-40 hours/week) Mon, May 10-Thurs, May 13, 2027 - 3:00-7:30pm - Bronx Tech and Dress Fri, May 14, 2027 - 3:00-8:00 - Bronx Performance Sun, May 16, 2027 - 12:00-8:00 - Manhattan Tech and Performance About HPCSE: The Hunts Point Children’s Shakespeare Ensemble is a collaboration between Hunts Point Alliance for Children (HPAC) and Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA), which challenges 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in Hunts Point to bring the work of William Shakespeare to life. The program gives students the opportunity to examine, comprehend, and internalize a Shakespeare play with the aim of owning and embodying the characters, the text, and the story. The Ensemble of young actors and singers work with HPAC and TFANA staff for 8 months to rehearse and perform a fully produced, 90-minute Shakespeare play, complete with sets, lights, costumes, and original music. This spring, in collaboration with Red Bull Theater and The Public Theater, the students will perform the play both in the Bronx and in Manhattan. Focused on increasing student confidence, literacy skills, critical thinking, school engagement, social skills, emotional intelligence, and building ensemble, students explore the timeless human themes in Shakespeare’s work, while also developing the focus, discipline, and long-term commitment necessary to accomplish putting on a 90-minute piece of theater. About HPAC: Hunts Point Alliance for Children (HPAC) is a non-profit organization transforming the lives of children and families in Hunts Point, a vibrant South Bronx neighborhood with significant opportunities to improve child well-being. Founded in 2006 in response to the low education outcomes of at-risk students in Hunts Point, HPAC pursued the bold mission of expanding the hopes and potential of the neighborhood and its families. The organization accomplishes its mission by nurturing children and youth along their path to college or career. Since its founding, HPAC has grown to become a central community leader and currently directly serves approximately 300 children across programs that target early learning all the way through college, in addition to working with community school and child-serving organizations to make educational success and post-secondary options available for all Hunts Point children. In addition to direct service at the community level, HPAC is a convener of many of the neighborhood’s schools and community-based organizations, aligning their efforts, expanding opportunities, and leveraging resources to connect every family with much-needed support. About the Position The Pianist/Chorus Assistant is the primary rehearsal pianist for HPCSE and works directly with the Chorus Director to help teach a chorus of 4th graders original songs written for a 90-minute Shakespeare production. Responsibilities for Pianist/Chorus Assistant include: Play piano for a group of 10-20 4th grade Chorus members based upon the aforementioned work schedule Teach original songs written for HPCSE by the Composer Provide feedback to Co-Directors/Chorus Director regarding original songs if necessary as it pertains to Chorus’s ability to perform said song (key, melody, lyrics, harmonies, etc.) Lead warm ups, games, and activities as needed, based upon ability Help Chorus Director with classroom management Assist in setting up/cleaning up rehearsal space Attend session check out meetings (5:30-6:00 on Tues/Thurs, 4:00-4:30 on Sat) Attend other team meetings as necessary Qualifications Proficiency in piano playing (high level of technical skill, ability to sight read, ability to modulate/adapt sheet music) Previous experience working with children Strong collaboration skills, patience and adaptability Availability during HPCSE program hours throughout the school year and ability to commit to your teaching schedule once finalized between you and program staff Compensation $60/hr TFANA Teaching Artists are paid as employees. This is a part-time, in-person role requiring frequent travel around the 5 boroughs of NYC. All TFANA staff are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
