Shift lead

Overview Shift Lead is responsible for performing the duties of a CSC and/or veterinary assistant/technician, and providing leadership and operational support across all shifts to ensure the hospital has onsite leadership to support associates and clients. The Shift Lead coordinates paraprofessional staff and supports hospital leadership to maximize productivity and profitability. The role works with the Practice Manager and/or Chief of Staff to ensure effective communication with clients, associates, Field Leadership, Central Team Support, and PetSmart. Responsibilities Paraprofessional responsibilities (approximately 80% of time): Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Actively recruit new clients by promoting hospital services. Manage routing of clients and pets to ensure superior client care and maximum productivity. Maximize the number of pets seen by the hospital team through a productive and efficiently run hospital to support wellness plan clients. Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times. Educate clients about pet health, perform or prepare procedures as allowed by state practice acts, complete preparatory work for other procedures, and monitor hospitalized or surgical pets as allowed. Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventative care, and hospital services. Assist incoming clients with documentation, enter pet information and history, ensure proper identification, provide instructions and invoices to outgoing clients, dispense medications as directed, and schedule future appointments. Assist with finances by maintaining accurate balances and following opening and closing procedures. Support the veterinarian and veterinary technician to maximize productivity and ensure flow of patients. Obtain accurate client information and medical history; maintain complete medical charts. Ensure safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraints and maintaining clean, sterile treatment areas, exam rooms and labs. Assist with surgery as applicable. Utilize technical skills within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines; conduct administrative functions as necessary. Leadership responsibilities (approximately 20% of time): Assist Practice Manager in building an efficient, productive hospital team providing high-quality care and service. Support hospital labor management and shift scheduling. May assist in selecting, training, and supervising paraprofessional staff to ensure quality medical care and exceptional client service. Lead by example in client service, educate about wellness plans and hospital services, and resolve client issues. Foster an environment where associates are engaged and productive. Ensure adherence to dress/grooming guidelines and readiness for surgery. Coordinate case assignments and prepare the team for daily cases; assist transfers from prior day or referrals to maintain continuity of care. Identify bottlenecks and propose solutions to improve operations. Communicate with field leadership and assist with client resolutions and invoice adjustments. Mentor new paraprofessional staff and perform quality checks on medical records, medications, regulatory documentation, cleanliness, and timeliness of care. Address equipment issues and assist in inventory management. Qualifications Associate’s degree or veterinary technician certification/licensure preferred; or equivalent education/experience. Two years of experience in healthcare, veterinary field, or related service industry; six months at Banfield preferred. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Medical background with veterinary terminology is preferred. Capabilities and Experience (CAN DO) Multi-tasking ability; ability to shift attention among tasks without loss of accuracy. Special Working Conditions Ability to work more than 40 hours per week; weekends and evenings may be required. Moderate noise level. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and lift up to 50 pounds. Exposure to pets, anesthesia, and other hazards as applicable. Experience, Education and/or Training Associate’s degree or veterinary technician certification/licensure preferred; or equivalent. Two years of experience required; experience at Banfield preferred. Medical background with veterinary terminology training preferred. Compensation and Benefits Pay range: $20.35 - $26.00 hourly. The pay range reflects general hiring range and may vary based on experience, skill level, education, and location.
