Police Officer
Police Officers are generally charged with keeping the peace, enforcing the law and providing safety and security in the community. A Police Officer shall exercise independent judgment in the performance of duties, but is responsible to follow orders of the Shift Commander in accordance with Department policy. Officers are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner when dealing with others; always keeping in mind the highest principles of police service. They are sworn to safeguard the lives and property of all persons and to protect the constitutional rights of all citizens, never letting their personal feelings interfere with their oath. General Responsibilities: Officers shall comply with all lawful orders directed to them by superiors to the best of their ability. They shall treat all persons within their scope of authority in a respectful manner and take necessary actions to insure the protection of their civil and constitutional rights. At any time, officers may be placed in situations that demand physical and mental endurance. Therefore, they must maintain a high degree of physical and mental fitness.
The duties of the Police Officer shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Officers shall be aware of and comply with all Rules, Regulations, Policies and Procedures, and General Orders of the Department and are responsible to keep abreast of any additions, changes, or modifications of same.
- Regular, predictable and prompt attendance. Report for roll call at specified time and place, wearing the uniform of the day with all equipment necessary to sustain them until the completion of their tour of duty.
- Responsible for the cleanliness and operating condition of all property, apparatus, equipment and tools.
- Enforce State of Wisconsin traffic and criminal laws and Municipal Ordinances. Apprehend criminals.
- Maintain current knowledge of laws, ordinances and law enforcement procedures.
- Respond to calls for service, investigate complaints from citizens, and investigate motor vehicle accidents. Prepare related reports. Maintain notes and records as required by law and Department procedures.
- Patrol by various means (i.e. vehicle, foot, ATV, etc.) in order to detect and prevent crime.
- Process crime scenes and protect major crime scenes until relieved.
- Process, package, label and inventory evidence and property received or recovered.
- Testify in Federal, State and Municipal courts.
- Serve court documents, such as subpoenas and protection orders.
- Conduct demonstrations, tours and public speeches to community groups and citizens, and respond to community concerns.
- Participate in crowd control functions.
- Learn and utilize technologies that will sustain and improve the level of service provided.
- Ability to work flexible or extended hours.
- Other duties as assigned by the Shift Sergeant/Command Officer.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. Education: High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate, or a High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED). Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree from a Wisconsin vocational, technical and adult education district or its accredited equivalent from another state or a minimum of 60 fully accredited college level credits at the time of application. Experience: Previous law enforcement experience is helpful but not required. Certification/Licensing: Obtain and retain a valid Wisconsin motor vehicle driver's license throughout employment. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Ability to effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in writing with subordinates, the public, peers, supervisors and others in the criminal justice system.
- Knowledge of Police Department rules, regulations, policies and procedures, federal laws, state laws and local ordinances.
- Mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, measurement, graphical and basic accounting.
- Ability to read, write and organize grammatically correct written reports and oral reports.
- Maintain confidentiality of Department and City matters.
- Use of standard office and law enforcement equipment including a personal computer and software in a "Windows" environment.
- Demonstration of good interpersonal skills for direct public contacts and interrelationship with peers, supervisors and court authorities. Effective public speaking skills.
- Demonstration of proficiency in the operation of firearms to meet departmental standards for all sworn officers.
- Good character as determined from a thorough background investigation.
- Good driving skills and driving record.

- You have been convicted of a federal felony or of any other offense, which if committed in Wisconsin could be punished as a felony unless granted a complete and unconditional pardon.
- You have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime or domestic violence or arrest/protection orders that prohibit the carrying of a firearm.
- You have been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the United States Military Service.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Outside and inside work place environment. Exposure to various temperature changes. Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. Periodic exposure to loud noises from sirens, weapons, etc. Exposure to hazardous conditions such as mechanical, electrical, chemical burns, explosives, heights, potential for physical injury, fast moving vehicles and violent or resistive persons. Police vehicle, police communication devices, computer, speed measuring devices, handgun, rifle, taser, other weapons as required, baton, handcuffs, flashlight, radar equipment, dictation equipment, camera, digital recording equipment, shovel, broom, first aid equipment, patient lifting devices, intoxilyzer and fingerprinting equipment.
