The primary purpose of this position, Aircraft Mechanic, WG-8852-12, is to serve as crew chief and technical authority, with custody of assigned prototype, pre-production, or heavily modified aircraft. These aircraft support crucial research, development, test, and evaluation programs. The primary responsibility is to ensure mission readiness. Responsibilities 1. Serve as crew chief of assigned aircraft and be responsible for performing, coordinating, and/or overseeing maintenance on aircraft that are non-fielded, prototype or preproduction, and/or extensively modified (Type 2) production aircraft that are dedicated to support research, development, test and evaluation, perform in-service testing of potential replacement items (form, fit, function), and for aircraft/stores compatibility testing. 2. Perform aircraft inspections including preflight, postflight, phase, and other scheduled and unscheduled inspections. 3. Diagnose and identify probable locations of malfunctions from the cockpit during engine run-up. 4. Initiate requests for unscheduled tools, equipment, and materials identified during preparation for flight. 5. Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work area. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Must climb, bend, stoop, crawl, and stand for prolonged periods on concrete or metal surfaces. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh about 50 pounds with mechanical lifting devices or with assistance from other workers. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in hanger areas, outdoors, in parked aircraft, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, and inclement weather. Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, hydraulic fluid, solvents, and hazardous fluids and gases such as Hydrazine and Halon. Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and injury from falls off scaffolds, ladders, and aircraft surfaces. May be exposed to intake suction and hot exhaust blast. Education Additional Information Hill Air Force Base provides worldwide engineering and logistics management for the F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, and the Minuteman III ICBM, and performs depot maintenance of the F-16, A-10, and C-130 Hercules aircraft. The base is located between Ogden and Salt Lake City. The area is known for year round activities, including skiing, hiking, boating, extreme sports, fishing and hunting, with four distinct seasons, low humidity and moderate snow fall in the valley.
