Behavioral Health Specialist

Primary City/State: Sun City West, Arizona. Department Name: Work Shift: Night. Job Category: Clinical Care. Position Summary As a Behavioral Health Specialist, you will focus on safety checks, assisting in ADL's, milieu management, falls prevention, and 1‑on‑1 observations. Previous nursing assistant or BHT experience is preferred. You may float to ED or medical units as a companion or direct observer. The position is part‑time during the night shift (7:00PM–7:30AM, two shifts per week, including weekends and holidays on a rotating basis). Shift scheduling is handled via an internal self‑scheduling tool, and a weekend shift differential of $1/hour is provided. Core Functions Provides basic nursing care to patients, including technical monitoring, taking vital signs, physical care, and assistance with activities of daily living. Orients patients to the treatment setting and participates in the implementation of their treatment plan. Conducts observational checks, checks patient belongings for contraband, and documents all observations and interventions in the patient medical record while maintaining confidentiality. Assists in maintaining a safe, orderly, and therapeutic environment. Maintains patient safety and protects patient rights through observation and reporting of patient behaviors, communications, interactions, and physical status. Identifies patients who are behaving aggressively or are in crisis and provides intervention, including redirecting, restraint, or seclusion as needed. Assesses and interacts therapeutically with patients and families. Provides treatment that promotes patient dignity, independence, individuality, strengths, privacy, and choice. Demonstrates respect for cultural diversity and patient boundaries. Plans and facilitates social and didactic group activities and may participate in other rehabilitation and treatment programs. Provides quality patient care by maintaining knowledge of behavioral disorders relevant to the position and staying current with state agency regulations. Identifies medication types commonly prescribed for the patient group and is aware of common side effects and adverse reactions. Assists in the admission, discharge, and transfer processes of patients and completes all required documentation in the patient medical record. Works under moderate supervision, interacting with all levels of clinical staff, multidisciplinary teams, patients, families, and medical and psychiatric physicians. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in a behavioral health related field or a high school diploma or equivalent with one year of direct patient care in an inpatient behavioral health setting. One year of experience in an inpatient psychiatric facility, including personal grooming, ADLs, educational and recreational group facilitation, maintaining a therapeutic milieu, observation precautions, and non‑violent de‑escalation techniques. Ability to recognize common symptoms of mental illness (depression, psychosis, mood dysregulation, substance abuse, maladaptive behavior, anxiety) and provide treatment interventions appropriate to the diagnosis. Employees must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. Meets the minimum age requirement as specified by state agency regulations. Preferred Qualifications Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
