Spring Branch Independent School District Job Title and Type HVAC Mechanic II Reports to: HVAC Supervisor assigned by the Facilities Manager Classification: Auxiliary (Skilled Labor) Wage/Hour Status: Non‑exempt Days: 250 Salary: Compensation Plan for Auxiliary Pay Plan, Pay Grade 309 Primary Purpose Constructs, modifies, or repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and environmental controls. Acts as technical expert in HVAC fields, reviews heating and cooling requirements, recommends system improvements, and resolves most problems independently under general supervision. Qualifications and Skills High school diploma or equivalent; two (2) years of college-level HVAC coursework preferred. Valid current Texas Class "C" driver’s license. EPA Universal license to handle CFCs under 40CFR Part 82, sub‑part F, or willingness to obtain within the first year of hiring. Preferred Stationary Building Engineer License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment. Preferred HVAC license or electrical maintenance license with City of Houston or state; a positive asset but not required. Considerable knowledge of heating, ventilation and refrigeration theory and of the practices, materials, and equipment used in HVAC maintenance and repair. Knowledge of centrifugal and reciprocal compressor design and operation. Working knowledge of electricity, pneumatic and digital control systems. Proficiency with specialized test equipment, computer workstations, HVAC programming, and troubleshooting of computer process boards. Ability to make independent, safe operation decisions concerning students, staff, and public safety. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Experience Minimum ten (10) years of HVAC experience required. Major Duties and Responsibilities Overhaul large reciprocal, absorption, and centrifugal compressors. Troubleshoot and repair complex chiller and control problems, determine needed parts and procedures. Analyze HVAC system requirements and recommend new systems or modifications. Research new equipment or procedures for potential adoption. Set up, repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring. Conduct energy management conservation surveys to realize efficient, cost‑effective HVAC use. Receive and complete work orders, select materials and hardware, and generate time, material, and job estimates. Maintain accurate records of materials and labor; inventory district‑owned tools and equipment; inspect and run projections. Collaborate with building principals and supervisors to complete projects and respond to emergency calls during regular and after‑hours. Safety Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures. Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition. Follow safety techniques for lifting, climbing, and other tasks. Report unsafe conditions immediately to supervisor. Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment. Other Responsibilities Adhere to federal, state, and municipal laws, regulations, and codes, and local board policies. Complete daily man‑hour logs and required documentation. Act as project lead and point of contact for new construction issues; assist energy operator and city village inspectors. Possible on‑call duty for after‑hours, weekends, and holidays. Perform other duties as assigned. Equipment Used Laptop, meters, gauges, welding equipment, ladder, hoist, hand and power tools, pipe bender, propane torch, light truck or van. Working Conditions Mental Demands: maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions, and interact with the public. Physical Demands: continual standing, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, carrying, climbing, and moderate lifting up to 105 lbs; working hours may be modified at supervisory discretion. Environmental Factors: continuous or extended periods exposed to sun, heat, cold, poor weather, or mechanical room noise.
