Environmental Health & Safety Engineer (Construction Safety)

Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY ENGINEER (CONSTRUCTION)As part of the SpaceX EHS Team, you will provide timely, clear, and high-quality technical expertise and assist in implementation of all environmental, health and safety programs for the construction of Cape Canaveral’s future Starship spaceport infrastructure. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical mechanical construction safety acumen with hands-on experience in crane and rigging operations, heavy equipment, welding, and fabrication. The candidate is highly skilled with both environmental and occupational safety fields, hands-on, and works well in a fast-paced environment. We work as a highly integrated team and job responsibilities will include helping other programs to ensure the overall success of SpaceX.RESPONSIBILITIES:Oversee and own the day-to-day EHS site management of a fast-paced, high impact construction project including the responsibilities below:Implement, enforce, and audit the site’s construction contractor EHS management program for SpaceX employees involved in or associated with contractor operations, ensuring requirements are understood and followed by contractors and subcontractors performing work for SpaceXDevelop and maintain documented safety observations from regular hazard identification inspections of facilities, machinery, safety equipment, and on-site construction to identify, mitigate hazards, and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and/or guidelines established by OSHA, NFPA and NIOSH and other applicable regulatory agencies, with particular attention to crane, rigging, heavy equipment, welding, and fabrication activitiesCollaborate with department leadership to complete job hazard assessments, establish Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements, determine safeguards, and implement health and safety policies and procedures to increase safety across all construction sites and projects, with strong emphasis on mechanical construction activitiesProvide technical oversight and support for high-risk mechanical construction tasks including crane and rigging operations, heavy equipment use, welding, and steel fabricationAbility to monitor and evaluate employee exposure to hazards during nominal processes or emergency situationsDevelop recommendations for remedial actions when safety policies are not met by employeesEducate and provide necessary safety training to construction personnel, including technical training on cranes, rigging, heavy equipment, welding safety, and fabricationInvestigate and write corresponding reports for incidents, spills, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine root causes, establish corrective actions and preventive measures, with focused analysis on any events involving cranes, rigging, heavy equipment, welding, or fabricationDevelop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations established by the EPA, RCRA, DOT and other applicable regulatory agenciesEnsure that resources are allocated appropriately to safety-related itemsBASIC QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree5+ years of experience in the design, development, and operational oversight of environmental, health and safety disciplines within the construction industryPREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:Bachelor’s degree in engineering with an emphasis in mechanical engineering or occupational health and safetyExperience in health and safety with commercial/industrial construction projectsNCCCO certificationCertified advanced rigger Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certificationCertified Safety Professional (CSP)Proficient with the management of high-risk activities including steel fabrication and erection, welding, crane and rigging operations, heavy equipment, electrical safety, excavation, confined space, machine guarding, fall protection, and material handlingBilingual in English and SpanishStrong knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying and documenting federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulationsStrong organizational and communication skillsExperience using Building Codes and National Electric CodeFamiliarity and implementation of machine guarding and industrial hygiene programsExperience with emergency response communication and incident management in incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil, and waterMicrosoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)ITAR REQUIREMENTS:To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
