Sun Tribe
Job Description
Job Description
Job Summary Sun Tribe EPC (“Sun Tribe”) is Virginia’s premier utility-scale solar design and build firm, specializing in small and medium-sized ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities. Our construction efforts are focused throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, Maryland, and neighboring states. At Sun Tribe, we build with purpose, prioritizing safety, quality, and environmental stewardship in every project we deliver.
The Safety Manager plans, directs, and oversees environmental, health, and safety practices and procedures for utility-scale solar construction projects, including day-to-day field safety execution and compliance activities on active project sites. This role plays a critical part in safe project execution across all phases of construction, including pre-mobilization planning, subcontractor readiness, active site monitoring, training, incident response, and continuous improvement initiatives. This role is highly field-oriented and requires active daily engagement with construction teams and subcontractors on project sites. As a key member of the project delivery team, the Safety Manager partners closely with Construction Management to support safe, compliant, and efficient field operations while reinforcing consistent safety expectations across subcontractors, field teams, and project leadership. This position reports directly to the Vice President, Environmental Health and Safety and works closely with Construction Management, Quality, Project Management, clients, subcontractors, and other internal stakeholders. This role supports projects primarily located throughout Virginia and requires regular travel to active construction sites.Principal Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day environmental, health, and safety execution activities across active solar construction projects
- Promote and reinforce a culture of safety and compliance aligned with project plans, company standards, and regulatory requirements
- Support project readiness activities including safety infrastructure deployment, onboarding, orientations, and mobilization planning
- Conduct documented site safety inspections, observations, and hazard assessments while supporting timely corrective actions
- Monitor subcontractor work activities to ensure safe work practices and compliance with project safety requirements
- Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions or behaviors are identified
- Lead or support toolbox talks, safety meetings, orientations, and field safety training activities
- Support development, review, and maintenance of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Method of Procedures (MOPs), work permits, and related safety documentation within Procore and company systems
- Track and maintain accurate safety records, observations, corrective actions, compliance documentation, and project reporting within Procore and company systems
- Support incident response activities, including reporting, documentation, investigations, and corrective action follow-up
- Partner closely with Construction Management, subcontractors, and project stakeholders to support safe, compliant, and efficient project execution
- Reinforce consistent safety expectations and operational alignment across subcontractors, field teams, and project leadership
- Monitor environmental and site conditions, including weather related hazards, and communicate mitigation requirements as needed
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across the EHS program and broader construction organization
- Education required: High school diploma or GED required; construction management, engineering, environmental health and safety, or related education and/or equivalent field experience preferred
- A minimum of four (4) years of construction safety experience required, preferably within utility-scale solar, renewable energy, industrial, or heavy construction environments
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and related industry standards, including experience supporting safety compliance within active construction environments
- Experience conducting field inspections, safety observations, investigations, and compliance reporting required
- Valid driver’s license and eligibility for corporate vehicle insurance coverage
- Recognized industry certifications preferred, including CHST, CSP, CIH, OHST, OSHA 500, or related credentials
- Experience leading subcontractor onboarding, orientations, and safety related training programs
- Experience using Procore or similar construction management platforms preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with field teams, subcontractors, leadership, and clients
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and active project demands
- Self-motivated with a commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence
- Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, dynamic construction environments while maintaining alignment with Sun Tribe’s core values
- Collaborative approach with the ability to build accountability, reinforce expectations, and support positive field culture
- Alignment with Sun Tribe’s core values: Community, Safety, Perpetual Improvement, Nature, Joy, and Respect
- Commitment to a culture of safety, accountability, and high-quality project delivery
- Some evening and/or weekend work may be required
- Willingness to travel and work at project sites throughout Virginia as required
- Work schedules may vary based on project demands, weather conditions, site issues, and construction schedules
- Role requires extensive field presence, with the majority of time spent actively supporting construction activities on active project sites
- Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at a time
- Exposure to characteristic construction site hazards
- Wearing of standard personal protective equipment while on project sites

This position is eligible for Sun Tribe’s comprehensive benefits package, which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with company match, life and disability insurance, paid time off, volunteer days, and access to an employee assistance program.
