Based on our internal equity review process, the starting hourly wage for this position will be $29.57. The full-salary range for this position is $29.57 - $36.70 per hour.

Current opportunities are available for the following areas:

• Solid Waste Program: During peak season operate of a large refuse truck (not CDL required) to service dozens of trash receptacles throughout the system. A typical work shift starts between 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. depending on the season and will include weekends in the summer. During the shoulder and non-peak season this employee will be responsible to perform the other Maintenance Worker job duties and will have the opportunity to work in a team environment on special maintenance projects.
• Ball fields: Parks Tacoma's ball fields are some of the community's most active and well-loved outdoor spaces. Help to uphold the quality and safety of these highly used facilities. Position Information Under the direction of the assigned maintenance lead, or supervisor, perform a variety of grounds maintenance and park facility maintenance duties with minimum direction. This position may also provide work direction to laborer/custodial staff, seasonal staff and volunteers. Maintenance workers have a demonstrated level of park landscape and grounds maintenance principles, practices and operations.

In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:

Essential Duties Operate a variety of equipment and machines, including loaders, trenchers, tractors, riding mowers, hand mowers, turf equipment, forklift, highlift, trucks, cement and asphalt equipment, air compressors and other equipment not requiring a Commercial driver's license; maintain equipment and tools in safe and proper working condition. Perform landscaping, plant and turf maintenance and other horticultural activities; prepare soil for seeding and sow grass seed; seed and lay sod; repair and maintain flower beds; mix and apply pesticides and chemicals according to established procedures and guidelines. Perform grounds maintenance and care duties, such as mowing, edging and trimming lawns, pruning trees and shrubs and removing leaves, snow and debris; water, fertilize and weed lawns and gardens as required. Maintain athletic fields; cut grass; drag and line fields. Inspect, maintain, and perform minor repairs for buildings, facilities, and parks including fences, irrigation systems, turf, picnic tables, signs and play equipment. Perform daily operation of wading pools, pools, and spray ground operations. Perform custodial and cleanup functions as required; clean restrooms, toilets, sinks, mirrors and walls. Sweep, mop, and clean floors; vacuum carpets and rugs. Perform annual deep cleaning and floor resurfacing. Perform repair and construction duties, such as irrigation, carpentry, painting or masonry work. Sweep and blow debris from walks and driveways; gather and remove trash from grounds. Prepare rooms or facilities for special events and functions; move furniture, small bleachers, equipment and other objects as required. Construct and maintain trails and assist in the repair of roads; assist in the construction/repair of catchbasins, storm equipment sewers, sidewalks and curbing; build paths and steps; mix, pour and finish concrete; line parking lots. Maintain sport courts including repairing backstops and fences as necessary; patch, clean, sweep and pressure wash tennis courts. Maintain routine records related to parks maintenance activities and assignments as required. Assist skilled maintenance personnel in the construction and installation, of furniture, fences, playground equipment, cabinets, and shelving. Assist in general maintenance, repair, and construction work in the various maintenance trades, including carpentry, plumbing, HVAC and painting. Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of utilities like gas, water, electrical lines. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Three years of related experience. LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS: • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record (driving abstract will be required at time of offer at applicant's expense). • Obtain a valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency within probationary period. • Ability to obtain job specific training, license and certification as required. • Demonstrated knowledge and skills of asset repairs and all park maintenance and operation.

Additional Information This position is a represented position with the International Union of Operating Engineers. HOURS: 40 hours per week ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor environment. Chemical fumes KNOWLEDGE OF: • Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures. • Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, horticultural practices and weeding. • Methods, equipment and materials used in building and grounds maintenance care. • Operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment. • Basic materials, equipment and terminology used in the maintenance trades. • Basic methods and practices of specialized trades such as carpentry, painting, irrigation and masonry. • Appropriate safety practices and procedures. ABILITY TO: • Learn procedures, methods and schedules. • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers providing quality customer service. • Use tools and equipment common to the maintenance trade. • Maintain Park District facilities in a clean, safe and secure condition. • Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events. • Perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging and weeding. • Assist others in specialized grounds keeping activities. • Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas. • Support other maintenance personnel in the maintenance and repair of Park District buildings and facilities and grounds. • Perform general maintenance and repair on District furniture, buildings, fixtures and facilities. • Learn safe operation of a wide variety of power equipment related to the building trades and grounds maintenance work. • Perform duties in the maintenance and care of buildings, facilities and grounds. • Maintain special facilities such as, tennis courts and athletic fields in proper condition. • Operate a variety of equipment and machines including tractors, mowers, trucks and other equipment not requiring a Commercial driver's license. • Maintain tools and equipment in proper condition. • Interpret rules and regulations. • Perform emergency first aid and CPR as needed and according to established guidelines. • Communicate clearly verbally and in writing. • Assess and evaluate situations effectively. • Exert optimal effort in successfully completing tasks. • Take initiative with minimal supervision
