Job Description

This role focuses on performing field-based inspections and surveys of utility poles to ensure safety, compliance, and reliability across the utility territory. You will spend most of your time working outdoors, traveling between sites in your own vehicle, documenting inspection findings, and supporting regulatory audits. The position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while following established procedures and safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform periodic inspections and surveys on utility poles at ground level to identify corrosion, damage, and other issues.
• Document all inspection findings accurately and completely in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.
• Complete all required paperwork and digital documentation using a field binder, handheld tablet, and other provided tools.
• Support the successful completion of regulatory audits and inspections by maintaining thorough records and following established processes.
• Conduct audit reviews with operations teams and assist them during audits to ensure full compliance.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders as needed.
• Follow all safety guidelines, including OSHA and company-specific safety procedures, while working in the field.
• Adhere to a set classroom schedule during training and actively participate in learning how to handle field scenarios.
• Complete homework and practice exams outside of class time to demonstrate understanding of training materials and maintain eligibility for continued employment.
• Use inspection tools and equipment correctly and consistently to complete accurate inspections in the field.
• Report to assigned job sites daily using your own vehicle and follow the route provided on the handheld tablet.
• Work independently throughout the day while remaining self-sufficient, organized, and accountable for assigned tasks.
• Communicate with supervisors regarding attendance, sick time, and schedule changes in a timely and professional manner.
• Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service when interacting with the public and utility customers.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience performing inspections, audits, or field surveys in a regulated environment.
• Comfort interfacing with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, and contractors.
• Strong interpersonal skills and initiative, with the ability to take ownership of tasks and solve problems in the field.
• Ability to support and participate in regulatory audits by providing accurate records and clear explanations of inspection activities.
• Comfort using handheld tablets, digital tools, and field binders to manage routes and documentation.

Work Environment

This is a 100% field-based position within a defined utility service territory, with frequent travel between sites using your own vehicle. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with additional Saturday shifts available at the supervisor’s request and at the contractor’s discretion.

You will work outdoors in all weather conditions and must be comfortable walking and standing for extended periods while inspecting utility poles at ground level. The role requires regular communication with supervisors regarding attendance and schedule, and you will typically report directly to the job site rather than a central office.

Training includes OSHA and company orientation, classroom sessions with a set schedule, scenario-based learning, practice exams, and homework that must be completed on your own time. Competency is evaluated through your ability to complete inspections correctly using the tools provided; successful performance leads to independent field work, while failure to meet standards may result in additional training or termination.

The organization provides essential equipment such as a simple tool set, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, handheld tablet for daily routes, safety vest, and hard hat. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oneonta, NY.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
