Electrical Engineer - Power Systems

Job Summary:

The Electrical Engineer will support the Grid Operations and Planning Research team by developing, maintaining, and applying power system digital twins to enhance grid planning, operations, technology evaluation, workforce training, and decision-making. This role involves power system modeling, simulation, real-time testing, and collaboration with utilities, research institutions, and technology vendors to drive grid modernization and innovation. Responsibilities:

• Develop, maintain, and enhance transmission and distribution system digital twins.
• Apply digital twins for planning studies, operational analysis, technology demonstrations, training, and decision support.
• Integrate operational, planning, asset, and real-time measurement data into digital twin environments.
• Build, validate, and improve power system models using industry-standard software.
• Conduct steady-state, dynamic stability, electromagnetic transient (EMT), and real-time digital simulation studies.
• Develop and execute Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing scenarios.
• Evaluate emerging grid technologies and support research projects, pilot programs, and technology demonstrations.
• Develop technical recommendations based on simulation and analytical results.
• Collaborate with industry partners to advance grid modernization strategies.
• Prepare technical reports, research papers, presentations, and documentation.
• Communicate findings and represent the organization at industry forums and collaborative research initiatives.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Strong knowledge of electric power system analysis, modeling, simulation, and operations.
• Hands-on experience with power system digital twins development and application.
• Proficiency with PSS EPSCAD software.
• Experience using RTDS and/or OPAL-RT platforms and real-time simulation environments.
• Experience conducting steady-state, dynamic, EMT, and real-time simulation studies.
• Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
• Ability to integrate operational, planning, asset, and measurement data into modeling and analytics platforms.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Specialization in Power Systems Engineering, Electric Energy Systems, Control Systems, or Computer Engineering.
• Experience with synchrophasor technologies, Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), SCADA, EMS, DERMS, and digital substations.
• Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C#, or Java.
• Knowledge of databases, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning applications.
• Experience working with electric utilities, research organizations, national laboratories, universities, and technology vendors.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, project management, and stakeholder collaboration skills.
