We Are Hiring! Join our team and become our new full-time Assistant Director Of Public Works in the Public Works department. Reporting to the Director of Public Works, this position supports the day-to-day management and implementation of Public Works operations and programs. This primarily operational and administrative role focuses on daily service delivery, staff coordination, capital project support, and regulatory compliance, and serves as Acting Director in the Director's absence.

Some info about the position…

• Assists the Director in planning, organizing, and directing daily Public Works operations across Streets, Water, Engineering support, Fleet Maintenance, and the Courtesy Transportation System.
• Oversees and coordinates day-to-day work activities, scheduling, staff assignments, and resource allocation to meet established service level expectations; conducts field inspections to ensure quality, productivity, safety, and adherence to Village standards.
• Directly supervises assigned employees and assists with the recruitment, training, evaluation, and professional development of Public Works personnel in accordance with Village policies.
• Supports the administration of collective bargaining agreements, including contract compliance, labor-management coordination, and grievance support.
• Assists in the preparation and administration of the Public Works operating budget and Capital Improvement Program (CIP); monitors expenditures, prepares cost estimates, and tracks project budgets.
• Supports the planning, coordination, and implementation of capital projects, including oversight of engineering and construction activities and coordination with consultants, contractors, and Federal, State, and County agencies (e.g., IDOT, IEPA, MWRD).
• Assists with permit compliance, right-of-way coordination, ADA coordination, grant administration support, and regulatory reporting related to water, sewer, and transportation infrastructure.
• Participates in snow and ice operations, emergency response, and after-hours incident management; serves in an on-call leadership capacity and acts as acting Director of Public Works in the Director's absence.

Qualified candidates should…

• Hold a Bachelor's degree in engineering, public administration, business administration, construction management, or a closely related field.
• Have five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in municipal public works or a related field, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory or leadership role.
• Have experience overseeing public works operations, construction activities, or infrastructure maintenance programs, including capital project delivery, budget administration, and grant support.
• Have experience working with unionized workforces and familiarity with the Federal, State, and County regulatory agencies affecting public works operations.

• Demonstrate strong leadership abilities with exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, and proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Possess a valid Illinois driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

Pay, benefits, and more…

• Salary range is $118,397 - $165,756 per year (starting salary is typically no higher than the midpoint and is dependent on qualifications).
• Typical hours are Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with evening, weekend, emergency work as needed.
