Job Description

The Boiler Operator / Stationary Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of boilers and related utility systems that support a hospital environment. This role ensures uninterrupted steam, heating, and energy services that are essential for patient care, infection control, and life‑safety systems. The position requires strong technical expertise, strict adherence to safety and compliance standards, and the ability to respond quickly to alarms, system irregularities, and emergency conditions.

Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, and maintain low‑ and/or high‑pressure boilers, steam systems, and auxiliary utility equipment to support continuous hospital operations.
• Perform routine inspections and take accurate readings of boiler pressures, temperatures, fuel usage, and water chemistry, documenting all data in logs and reports.
• Respond promptly to alarms, system irregularities, and emergency conditions to prevent service interruptions and protect life‑safety systems.
• Conduct preventive maintenance and assist with corrective maintenance on boilers, pumps, valves, burners, condensate systems, and related mechanical equipment.
• Support central utility plant operations, coordinating boiler performance with chillers, HVAC systems, domestic hot water systems, and other central plant equipment.
• Perform water testing and water treatment tasks to maintain proper boiler and steam system chemistry and protect equipment from damage.
• Troubleshoot boiler, steam, and auxiliary equipment issues, identify root causes, and perform or support necessary repairs.
• Ensure compliance with hospital safety procedures, OSHA requirements, and readiness standards associated with healthcare and life‑safety regulations, including Joint Commission expectations.
• Follow lockout/tagout, confined space, and other safety protocols when working on mechanical and utility systems.
• Read and interpret gauges, meters, equipment manuals, and facility documentation to monitor system performance and make informed operational decisions.
• Accurately document log readings, maintenance activities, alarms, and repairs in logs and computerized systems as required.
• Communicate equipment status, issues, and repair needs clearly and promptly with Engineering and Facilities teams.
• Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe boiler room, central plant, and mechanical spaces at all times, including routine cleaning of equipment and work areas.
• Assist with facility maintenance tasks related to boilers, steam systems, chilled water systems, and other building utility systems as needed.
• Work rotating or assigned shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on‑call coverage, to support 24/7 hospital operations.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or GED.
• Previous experience operating boilers, preferably in a hospital, healthcare, or other critical‑care or critical‑facility environment.
• Strong working knowledge of steam systems, including boiler safety devices, control instrumentation, steam distribution, and condensate return systems.
• Demonstrated skill in operating and monitoring low‑ and/or high‑pressure boilers, pumps, valves, burners, and associated auxiliary utility equipment.
• Experience supporting central plants with boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, domestic hot water systems, and other building utilities.
• Ability to perform preventive maintenance, including inspections, PMs, log readings, water testing, and basic repairs on boiler and plant equipment.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting boiler, steam, and central plant issues and responding effectively to alarms or equipment failures.
• Knowledge of safety and compliance practices, including boiler safety devices, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space protocols, and healthcare life‑safety standards.
• Ability to read and interpret gauges, meters, equipment manuals, plant monitoring information, and facility documentation.
• Strong documentation skills for recording readings, maintenance activities, and system conditions accurately and consistently.
• Clear verbal and written communication skills for working with Facilities and Engineering teams.
• Physical ability to stand and walk for extended periods, climb stairs and ladders, and work in mechanical rooms.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work safely in hot, confined, or noisy environments.
• Willingness and ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on‑call schedules as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Stationary Engineer or Boiler Operator license, as required by local or state regulations.
• Experience with high‑pressure boiler operation in a hospital or similar critical environment.
• Familiarity with plant monitoring systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
• Prior exposure to hospital compliance inspections or accreditation surveys, such as those conducted by regulatory or accrediting bodies.
• Knowledge of TDLR boiler registration and inspection requirements and general understanding of municipal boiler permits and licenses.
• Experience with chilled water systems, domestic hot water systems, and other central plant utilities.
• Background in facilities maintenance, including boiler maintenance, steam system repairs, and maintenance of auxiliary utility equipment.
• Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a safety‑focused mindset when working around pressurized and high‑temperature systems.

Work Environment

This position is based in a hospital central utility plant and mechanical spaces, working closely with boilers, steam systems, chillers, HVAC equipment, domestic hot water systems, and other building utilities. The standard shift runs Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with the expectation of working holidays and weekends when needed to support continuous operations. Requests for days off must be submitted in advance to allow time to arrange coverage. The work involves standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and performing tasks in hot, confined, and noisy environments such as boiler rooms and mechanical rooms. You will regularly use tools, meters, gauges, plant monitoring systems, and maintenance documentation systems while following strict safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and confined space protocols.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bedford, TX.

The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $34.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
