Director of Teaching Fellows

About the Opportunity The Director of Teaching Fellows will provide strategic leadership and day-to-day management for the North Carolina Teaching Fellowship Program. The Director is responsible for: staffing the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission; developing and coordinating marketing and recruitment efforts for the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program, including proactive, aggressive, and strategic recruitment of potential recipients; supervising Teaching Fellows staff, including the Assistant Director of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program; and managing key benefits of the Teaching Fellows program, including professional development and debt forgiveness, in partnership with institution program directors and the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. This position is a hybrid work arrangement and will work at least 2-3 days per week onsite at the Dillon building in downtown Raleigh's Warehouse District, with travel to campus sites approximately 2-3 days per month. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station. About the UNC System Office The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press. About the Team The Strategy and Policy division is charged with enhancing and furthering the UNC System's strategic goals. The division partners with the President and chancellors on System-wide strategic initiatives, is responsible for the institutional performance measurement framework, and serves as a higher-education policy expert to the President, the Board of Governors, and the NC General Assembly. The division also tracks and assesses state and national trends in higher education, and their likely impact on the UNC System, and proactively identifies new initiatives to support System strategies. The division also provides oversight of the University and P12 Partnerships unit as well as the GEAR UP Program. Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills Master's degree or higher in a related field. Three to five years of proven leadership within public education or related field. Required Competencies At least three years teaching experience A full understanding of North Carolina's K-12 and higher education system (Department of Public Instruction, NC Community College System, UNC System, and the NC Independent Colleges and Universities) Experience in the development and management of multi-faceted educational programs An understanding of successful college and/or teacher recruitment strategies to include knowledge of the appropriate stakeholders within school systems, higher education, professional organizations, and community-based entities that would serve as key partners in marketing the program Strong managerial skills and superior organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills A track record that demonstrates success in positions of progressively increasing responsibility and authority, including personnel and fiscal management and strategic planning A demonstrated commitment to teacher recruitment and educator preparation Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills Preference will be given to candidates who have worked at least three years as a public school administrator in North Carolina. Preference will be given to candidates with experience managing a statewide PK-16 educational program and/or communicating with a wide range of statewide stakeholders in leading a large educational effort, including financial management.
