Assistant Research Scientist (Toxic Substances)

Job Title Assistant Research Scientist Application Deadline Applications to be submitted by July 17, 2026. Compensation Grade: P14. Minimum and maximum $56,025 annually. Positions in NewYork City, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, or Westchester Counties receive a $4,000 annual downstate adjustment (pro‑rated for part‑time positions). Location NewYork State Department of Health, Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment (BTSA). Must be located in or willing to relocate to NewYork, NewJersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts. Responsibilities Assist state and local partners, including school district personnel, to improve knowledge and awareness of school environmental health issues through the NewYork State School Environmental Health Program. Work with public, private, tribal, and disadvantaged schools to help them understand and implement best practices to improve indoor air quality and thus the health and learning of school‑aged children and staff. Perform indoor air quality assessments and prepare technical reports summarizing findings. Prepare and present technical materials on ways to control, reduce, and eliminate exposures in schools. Address additional focus areas of the program such as climate action, water quality, and more. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of research experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field. Preferred Qualifications Degree and/or experience in industrial hygiene or public health. Academic or working knowledge of indoor air quality. Experience collecting or working with environmental data such as air sampling data. Knowledge of the effects of chemicals and materials on the body and the environment. Knowledge of federal and state building regulations. Experience working in or with K‑12 schools. Experience working with a multidisciplinary group of professionals. Experience communicating, both verbally and in writing, with a variety of audiences. Experience preparing technical reports or other data‑driven or science‑based resources/materials. Strong organizational skills. Conditions of Employment Grant‑funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant and contract deliverables is required. Travel up to 10% of the time will be required. Hybrid work schedule with a combination of onsite and remote work may be offered.
