Job Description Location: Chicago, Illinois Business Unit: Rush Medical Center Hospital: Rush University Medical Center Department: Comparative Research Center Work Type: Full Time (Total FTE between 0.9 and 1.0) Shift: Shift 1 Work Schedule: 8 Hr (7:00:00 AM - 3:30:00 AM) Pay Range: $29.36 - $42.61 per hour Rush salaries are determined by many factors including, but not limited to, education, job‑related experience and skills, as well as internal equity and industry specific market data. Summary Under administrative direction of the Director and the Manager, Comparative Research Center, the Supervisor of Animal Husbandry directly coordinates the daily animal husbandry and facility maintenance related functions of the Rush University Medical Center Comparative Research Center and its associated satellite animal use facilities. The individual who holds this position exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures. Required Job Qualifications American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certified at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level or LATG certification eligible. Five years continuous experience with an AAALAC-I accredited laboratory animal care and use program of which two years were spent in a supervisory capacity and including: firm understanding of animal physiology and behavior, animal husbandry and care procedures, firm understanding of physical plant and facility equipment systems, firm understanding of animal protocol systems, and firm understanding of IACUC functions. Knowledge of regulatory requirements and animal program issues. General computer literacy. Self‑starter; ability to work independently. Ability to work as a team member. Preferred Job Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences. Physical Demands This position carries the potential for employee exposure to blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials, chemicals, and other hazardous conditions that may pose a potential health risk. Each employee is trained and is expected to observe all fire and safety procedures, blood‑borne pathogen, hazard communication standards, and the institutional animal care and use program. Ability to handle and restrain all species of animals used in the facility. Ability to work in close proximity with all species of animals used in the facility. Ability to lift, move, and/or place objects of a minimum of 50lbs. in a repeated fashion. Working knowledge of biology, physiology, and behavioral characteristics of each laboratory animal species. Working knowledge of personnel protective methods and devices. No known animal allergies. Responsibilities Administrative Functions Assists in the development and review of general administrative policies and procedures as they relate to animal husbandry and facility maintenance and provides input to the Director and the Associate Director of CRC Operations regarding implementation. Coordinates and performs facility record‑keeping and documentation functions as they relate to animal husbandry and facility maintenance. Performs daily monitoring of the facility equipment and supplies and use of supplies and services as they relate to animal husbandry and facility maintenance. Acts as a direct liaison to research principal investigators and technicians as it relates to animal husbandry issues. Acts as a direct liaison to Medical Center Engineering and Environmental Services Departments as related to facility maintenance issues. Assists in the development and review of and participates in the institutional animal care and use education and training program as it relates to general animal husbandry, facility maintenance, and equipment maintenance. Participates in all facility inspections to include Semi‑annual IACUC, USDA, and AAALAC‑I. Facility Husbandry and Maintenance Operations Functions Directly coordinates and performs daily animal husbandry functions (as required) specific to each animal species and experimental situation to include barrier and biohazard facility housed animals. Directly coordinates and performs normal physical plant and facility equipment systems maintenance procedures. Directly coordinates and performs daily and periodic sanitization schedules for animal rooms and all necessary equipment. In conjunction with the Veterinary Technician, assists in the daily maintenance of facility support rooms (i.e. operating suites, treatment rooms, procedure rooms, recovery rooms, and administrative offices) when indicated by Associate Director of CRC Operations. Directly coordinates and prepares daily animal husbandry and facility maintenance functions for each satellite animal care facility (as required). Properly uses and effectively applies various cleaning and disinfectant agents in the facility and train subordinate about their use. Personnel Management Functions Coordinates the daily work schedules and responsibilities and directly supervises Animal Care Technician I, II, and III personnel in the Comparative Research Center. Assures adherence to standard operating policies by the Animal Husbandry Staff. Assists in the hiring process of Animal Care Technician I, II, and III personnel. Assists in the training and education of Animal Care Technician I, II, and III personnel. Assists in all disciplinary activities of Animal Care Technician I, II, and III personnel. Assists in all annual review activities of Animal Care Technician I, II, and III personnel. Technical Services Functions Operates and maintains facility cage washer, bottle washer, autoclave, washer and dryer, waste compactor, etc. Maintains and operates minor facility equipment such as pressure washer, floor scrubber, mops brooms, and buckets, etc. Understands and uses personal protective equipment and practices associated with animal husbandry procedures. Coordinates receipt of animal shipments and housing of animals specific to each species, each facility, and each research application. Learns and operates facility based computer system and software applications related to laboratory animal management. Participates in all education and training skills laboratories. Continuing Education Functions Reads all educational materials related to the care and use of laboratory animals as directed by the Director and the Associate Director of CRC Operations. Reads and understands all operating policies of Rush and the Comparative Research Center. Obtains membership in Chicago Branch AALAS and attends no less than one meeting per year. Attends National AALAS Meeting and/or other meeting and training opportunities related to laboratory animal sciences field when indicated by Senior Director. Seeks advancement in the field of laboratory animal science through participation in AALAS recognized training program with a focus on supervisory management. Participates in institutional training programs as directed.
