Job Description Under the general (direct or indirect) supervision of a licensed and Board-Certified Physician, evaluates and treats patients with medical and/or surgical oncologic, hematologic and/or surgical problems. Delivers direct patient care; performs routine histories and physical examinations; performs and/or interprets diagnostic tests and/or procedures as detailed in the department specific scope of practice. Participates in teaching and quality assurance activities with other members of the clinical department.
The Hematology/Sickle Cell Physician Assistant functions in the outpatient/ambulatory and inpatient settings. The Physician Assistant plays a vital role in supporting patients and hematologists by coordinating and delivering high-quality care to patients with complex hematologic diseases. Responsibilities A. Clinical: Under the direct or indirect supervision of the Department's physician/surgeon of the Medical Staff, performs the clinical duties of a Physician Assistant, including;
-New York State Mandated Infection Control Course Certificate. -American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications as required by Department. -Specialized certification may be required in specific skills (i.e., central line, PICC, ultrasound, advanced airway) may be required. -Demonstrates the highest level of professionalism. -Possesses the knowledge and demonstrates the ability required to effectively diagnose and treat medical/surgical problems under the direction of physician; Demonstrates ability to interact effectively with hospital staff, patients and family members. -Possesses the necessary manual dexterity and skills required for anticipated clinical duties and physical strength necessary for lifting and proper handling/positioning of patients. -Strong work ethic and desire to participate in a team-oriented, people-centered, collaborative mission-driven institution -Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal skills to allow effective communication with a wide variety of team members, colleagues, and physicians.

- Participates in outpatient/ambulatory care, including new and follow-up patient visits, coordination of care, and rendering prescribed treatments.
- Provides inpatient consultation, inpatient care, patient rounds, and inpatient consultations under the direction of the supervising physicians/surgeons. May respond to initial requests for service-specific consultation.
- Performs medical evaluations, including histories, physical examinations, ordering/interpreting diagnostic tests, and prescribing medications as appropriate, in conjunction with supervising physicians/surgeons. Writes appropriate documentation in patients' charts.
- Performs perioperative management, including preoperative assessments and postoperative evaluations, as directed by physicians/surgeons.
- May perform routine or emergency procedures including but not limited to pap smears, irrigation and suturing of wounds or incisions, drainage of abscesses, insertion of nasogastric tubes and intravenous lines, sampling of arterial blood, etc.
- Writes appropriately authorized prescriptions including controlled substances.
- May initiate or participate in initial management and stabilization of patients or other medical or surgical emergencies.
- Assists in/Performs bedside procedures, as appropriate.
- Assists in operative procedures as a first assistant, as appropriate.
- Educates patients, families, and caregivers about disease processes, treatment plans, and post-treatment care.
- Participates in multidisciplinary tumor boards and collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other members of the care team to ensure continuity of care.
- Collaborates with physicians, residents, nursing, and other team members to ensure delivery of optimum quality of patient care. Confers regularly with supervising physician to keep them apprised of clinical developments.
- Performs other duties pursuant to clinical responsibility, such as arranging follow-up for patients, obtaining informed consent from patient for procedures they are credentialed to perform, recalling patients for further evaluation and treatment, escorting patients, when necessary, to other areas of the hospital, etc. Informs patients of necessary post-discharge instructions as required.
- Participates in clinical research, including establishing and maintaining research database. Assist with the coordination of clinical trials.
- Provides continuity in patient care areas to assure that department and hospital policies concerning patient care standards are adhered to.
- Participates actively in the training of new employees. Assures that the training process meets Departmental standards.
- Participates in the ongoing quality improvement activities of the Department, as assigned.
- Plays an active role in the training of students. Assures that the training process meets Departmental and educational standards.
- Participates in special projects, as assigned.
- Remains informed of patient management trends based on literature. Participates actively in continuing medical education activities, as appropriate to the scope of practice.
- Represents Department on hospital wide committees, as assigned.
