Job Summary This position is located in the D.C. Department of Corrections (DOC), Central Detention Facility (DC Jail) and Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF). As an entry level Correctional Officer, incumbent serves in a developmental capacity, under the overall supervision of a Supervisory Correctional Officer and a Training Coordinator. Incumbent undergoes an intensive training program, which consists of formal classroom instruction, demonstrations, selected reading in the correctional field, and on-the-job training (OJT) under close supervision. Duties & Responsibilities Enforce the regulations governing the operation of the facility and serve as both a supervisor and counselor of inmates. Work long and irregular hours, unusual shifts, Sundays, holidays and unexpected overtime during emergencies or periods of heavy workload or limited staff. Enforce rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct to ensure judicial sanctions are carried out and inmates remain in custody. Provide custody and security of inmates, including observing their actions. Conduct pat and strip searches of offenders. Restrain and secure, where necessary, assaultive inmates; escort and transport offenders by walking and/or vehicles. Submit disciplinary reports on inmate violations of rules and regulations and reports on illegal or questionable occurrences. Conduct inventory of individual inmate property and document the results. Assist in the supervision of inmates in living quarters, visiting hall, during recreational activities, while in transit and during sleeping hours. Count inmates at designated and random times as instructed. Maintain accountability of inmates assigned to work detail. Respond to emergency situations such as escape, suicide, riot and other disturbances in accordance with Department policies, procedures, rules, regulations and post orders. Qualifications & Education Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, at least one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression. Licenses & Certifications Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must be able to possess and use a firearm. Incumbent must qualify and remain qualified for firearm usage as a condition of employment for the duration of employment. TB test will be required prior to entry on duty and annually. Working Conditions / Environment Work is performed in a correction facility. Conditions include working inside and outside; working around machines with moving parts, radiant and electrical energy, working protracted or irregular hours, constant noises, excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness and chill, dry atmosphere, dust, fumes, smoke using chemical agents, etc. Other Significant Facts Tour of Duty: Must be available for rotational shift work normally requiring rotation on each of three shifts, seven days per week, to any and all of the Department’s post. Pay Plan, Series and Grade: CS-0007-06. Promotion Potential: CS-08. Duration of Appointment: Career Service – Regular Appointment. Collective Bargaining Unit: This position may be covered by a collective bargaining agreement. You may be required to pay an agency service fee through payroll deduction. Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre‑employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). This position is also subject to mandatory pre‑employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana. Must have a clear criminal background, must be able to pass random drug/alcohol screenings. Must be able to read and interpret written material and must possess effective written and oral communication skills. Must be U.S. Citizen or at least one (1) year of Permanent Residency status. Essential Position Designation: This position is designated as Essential pursuant to Chapter 12 of the D.C. personnel regulations, Hours of Work, Legal Holidays, and Leave. Residency Requirement: Applicants claiming "Residency Preference" will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
