MCDOT supports its residents, commuters, and visitors with transit options and infrastructure that provides seamless transportation services to the public.

MCDOT seeks a candidate for the Transportation Systems Technician I/II (Overhead) position in the Transportation Management Section within the Division of Traffic Engineering & Operations. The person is a detail-oriented problem-solver who can create innovative solutions. Good interpersonal and communication skills, along with basic computer skills, are desired. The person in this position will prioritize, organize, and multitask to meet deadlines while simultaneously following through on multiple projects. The selected candidate must be able to work independently, as part of a team, or in group settings to meet established goals. Speaking clearly and distinctively with a diverse population and over a two-way radio is essential. Basic electrical or electronic foundation or construction techniques are essential for learning about traffic signal technologies.

The candidate must be able to work rotating shifts on weekdays, weekends, holidays, and on standby. The ideal candidate MUST have a valid Commercial Driver's License. Bucket truck experience is desirable.

Additional Information - Experience in one or more of the following relevant knowledge and ability areas is desirable:

• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License.
• Bucket truck experience.
• Basic electrical foundation or construction techniques.

Physical Ability: Strict observance of safety precautions and procedures is required, as much of the work involves working with and around electrical voltage and high-powered equipment and/or working at extended heights. Employees in this class must possess good strength and agility in order to repeatedly lift objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and to be able to occasionally maneuver objects up to one hundred (100) pounds.

What You'll Be Doing

The person in this position will perform various tasks related to traffic signal construction, modification, installation, and maintenance of transportation systems equipment. The position's primary duties involve working from a bucket truck and are physically demanding.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Installing overhead traffic signal heads, signs, and electrical cables.
• Determine causes of and repair problems with overhead equipment.
• Install and troubleshoot overhead communication cables.
• Relamp traffic signal heads.
• Replace damaged pedestrian pedestals and other equipment.
• Install video and other detector technologies overhead at traffic signals.
• Work on 12 to120-volt AC circuits and 24-voltDC/logic circuits.
• Set up work zone safety traffic control standards inside a construction area or incident sites.
• Set up and program variable message signs.
• Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, near electricity, construction, incident sites, and under stress while working on traffic signal equipment.

: Essential: The individual selected for this position will be considered an "Essential Employee." Essential employees must report to work during a general emergency or on liberal leave. This individual selected is REQUIRED to work overtime during inclement weather situations and emergencies, which may include overnight stays. Rotating Shift Work: The candidate must be able to work rotating shifts on weekdays, weekends, holidays, and on standby. Offsite Work: The candidate must be able to occasionally perform field work, near and in roadways with active traffic, in a variety of environmental conditions, including hot and cold temperatures.

Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Systems Technician I - Overhead Construction

Experience : One (1) year of experience involving electrical wiring and intersection setup of traffic signal control devices and related equipment.

Education : Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland supplemented by completion of either formal school or on-the-job training in electrical wiring appropriate to traffic signal control devices.

Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Physical Ability : Ability to lift objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and to be able to occasionally maneuver objects weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds.

License : Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) from the applicant's state of residence. Note: There is no substitution for this section.

Medical Protocol : This position requires successful completion of a pre-employment medical evaluation, which includes a limited physical examination and drug screening.

Transportation Systems Technician II - Overhead Construction

Experience : Three (3) years of experience involving electrical wiring and intersection setup of traffic signal control devices and related equipment.

Education : Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland supplemented by completion of either formal school or on-the-job training in electrical wiring appropriate to traffic signal control devices.

Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Physical Ability : Ability to lift objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and to be able to occasionally maneuver objects weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds.

License : Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Commercial Driver's License from the applicant's state of residence. Note: There are no substitutions for this section.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

Interview preference criteria will be:

1. Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License.
2. Heavy Duty Vehicles, such as operating a bucket truck experience.
3. Basic electrical foundation or construction techniques.
4. Experience using computers, Microsoft applications, and the internet.
