The role requires strong teamwork, independence, and a commitment to excellence in mental health services. Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Administrator or Nurse Manager, observe, assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate patient care outcomes, documenting all aspects of patient care. Coordinate scheduling within assigned areas and provide primary proactive management for the service area during the assigned shift. Supervise, counsel, and evaluate other nursing staff; collaborate with Nurse Coordinator, other Nurse Managers, and MH Supervisor/Specialist to ensure 24‑hour continuity of care. Assume duties of the Nurse Coordinator in the event of absence. Provide direct nursing care to individual patients as needed, including assessment of health and mental status upon admission, transfer, and ongoing care. Carry out medical staff orders and implement nursing interventions in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. Facilitate a smooth admission and/or transfer process, communicate with admissions staff, review documentation, and triage patients as required. Provide and document individualized or group teaching related to medications, illnesses, and treatments, using appropriate methods for various age groups and cognitive levels. Implement special precautions, restraints, and seclusion procedures as ordered, following departmental policy. Participate in client abuse and neglect processes, ensure patient safety, and implement Treatment Intervention Protection Strategies (TIPS). Coordinate and administer effective utilization of nursing service personnel on assigned units. Attend mandatory trainings, in‑service programs, and continuing education appropriate to the patient population. Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation when required. Essential Job Functions Attend work on a regular basis, requesting specific shift schedules, rotating schedules, extended shifts, and overtime in accordance with agency leave policy. Assess patient health/mental status upon admission and transfer; document assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation in the patient record. Respond to emergency situations, including CPR/Heimlich techniques as per American Heart Association specifications. Provide direction and coordination of staffing and patient care activities, addressing performance problems promptly and maintaining accurate documentation. Assist with admission and transfer processes during working hours, ensuring appropriate status verification and triage. Implement nursing interventions and medical staff orders per nursing standards and hospital procedures. Document individual/group teaching regarding medications, illness, and treatment in patient records. Enforce department policies regarding restraints, seclusion, and patient rights. Participate in abuse and neglect processes, ensuring patient safety and adherence to Treatment Intervention Protection Strategies. Join performance improvement teams as the nursing representative and coordinate effective use of nursing personnel. Complete ongoing training and education programs to meet patient needs. Assist in disaster response or COOP activation duties, if required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of American Nurses Association Nursing Standards. Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures. Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act. Proficiency in supervisory and management techniques. Skill in performing CPR, agency‑approved aggression management, restraint techniques, and emergency care in medical or psychiatric settings. Positive interaction skills with patients, staff, families, and the public. Ability to handle crisis situations calmly. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Registrations, Licensure, and Certifications Licensed to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Texas or a state participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact. Initial Screening Criteria Graduated from a nursing program accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. At least six (6) months of experience as a practicing registered nurse. At least six (6) months of experience as a practicing registered nurse in a health agency, hospital, or health‑care facility (preferred). Bachelor's degree (preferred). Additional Information Eligible for additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights, and/or weekends.
