Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Overview Fairview is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to join the Acute Care Laboratory team at M Health Fairview St. John's Hospital in Maplewood, MN. This position is a 0.8 FTE (64 hours per biweekly pay period) and requires flexibility to work both day and evening shifts. It includes the following shift options: Day Shift: 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Evening Shift: 2:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Weekend Rotation: Days; every 3 out of 6 weekends Holiday Rotation: 2 holidays per year About the Laboratory The laboratory at M Health Fairview St. John's Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility offering a broad range of diagnostic services, including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics. Responsibilities Follows established guidelines to obtain specimens and prioritize work. Collects and processes biological specimens with appropriate technique following established standard operating procedures (SOP). Properly verifies patient identity, and assesses integrity of all specimens for testing. Ensures correct identification of specimens before testing and determines priority for specimen testing and procurement. Performs a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing—including all CLIA ’88 waived, moderate, or high complexity procedures—in areas such as hematology, coagulation, microbiology, serology, immunology, immunohematology, chemistry, special chemistry, urinalysis, phlebotomy, and EKG. Operates laboratory instrumentation and information systems according to procedure. Performs and documents maintenance procedures and maintains adequate supplies. Recognizes problems and seeks assistance or consults with supervisor when necessary; initiates proper safety or emergency responses. Evaluates testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention—determining if results fall within normal parameters, using age‑specific reference ranges, and taking action to recheck abnormal, discrepant, or unexpected results. Directly communicates abnormal and critical results to caregivers and obtains necessary clarifications. Demonstrates commitment to laboratory quality assurance, performance improvement, and compliance programs—documenting deviations, reagent checks, and communicating values beyond QC decision levels. Participates in performance‑improvement programs by collecting data, reviewing results, and implementing action steps. Collaborates with laboratory customers to promote customer satisfaction. Displays competency and compliance with all regulatory‑agency policies. Orients, mentors, and evaluates new employees and students—providing training checklists, evaluating work prior to release, and reporting progress to supervisor. Required Qualifications Associate or higher degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field, including a practicum or equivalent for high‑complexity testing personnel as specified in CLIA ’88. Diploma or transcript with relevant coursework (e.g., 6 semester hours each in biology and chemistry). Completion of a 50‑week U.S. military medical laboratory training course is acceptable for applicants with limited academic credit. Applicant must be eligible to receive or currently hold an approved Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) laboratory certification (ASCP, ASCPi, AMT, or AAB—MLT) within one year of the application date.
