Starting Pay: $15.00 hourly


General Description:


The School Crossing Guard escorts schoolchildren safely across streets and highways, monitoring their behavior and ensuring well-being. The member performs operations and clerical tasks and duties specific to the position. The School Crossing Guard ensures that the Department of Transportation's procedures for the safe crossing of children as prescribed by the Volusia Sheriff's Office are followed.


The most important and essential job function of the position is attitude which includes the following: interacting positively and cooperating with co-workers, responding politely to customers, working as a team member, functioning under intense time pressure and responding in a positive manner to supervision.


The School Crossing Guard may perform other related duties and tasks, as required, and shall have the physical, mental and emotional abilities to perform the essential job duties of the position.


Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
• Physically and mentally capable of safely crossing children and fulfilling the requirements of the job.
• Must successfully complete medical, CVSA, and background examinations.
• Must have a home telephone or cell phone access.
• Must maintain a valid Florida Driver's license.

Selection Process: The selection process will include a review of each qualified applicant's education and experience and a formal interview in accordance with VSO policies and procedures.


Essential Functions:

• Places school sentinel warnings in the roadway at designated places near crossing points.
• Regulates vehicular and pedestrian traffic at designated crossings.
• Reports all traffic hazards near school crossings to the supervisor or proper authorities.
• Reports flagrant traffic violators and/or suspicious persons loitering in the school crossing areas.
• Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
• Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and local ordinances.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions:

• Works during inclement weather conditions.
• Works close to vehicular traffic flow.
• Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
• Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
• Must be able to remain available to work when a public emergency or disaster occurs.

Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to identify traffic hazards.
• Ability to speak, read, and write English.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.
• Interpersonal.
• Basic comprehension.

Required Knowledge:

• VSO General Orders and procedures.
• Florida Department of Transportation regulations and School Crossing Guidelines.
• Basic first aid.
• Traffic safety principles.
• Traffic laws.
• Appropriate forms.

Physical Requirements:

• See at normal range or with reasonable accommodation.
• Hear at normal range or with reasonable accommodation.
• Speaks English understandably.
• Stand for approximately two (2) hours.
• Walk at a moderate/fast pace.
• Ambulate independently.
• Manual dexterity.
• Lift up to thirty-five pounds (35lbs.).
• Bend/squat.
• Step up/down to 4-5 inch street curb.
• Recognize colors.
• Hold sign with extended arm.
