Physician Assistant - Trauma

Responsibilities Provides patient services under the supervision of a physician within the Trauma Center and Emergency Department. Elicits detailed patient histories, performs physical examinations, gives treatment, prescribes certain drugs, and counsels patients on health problems. May perform procedures as approved by the Medical Staff credentialing process. Essential Functions Completes daily rounds on all assigned patients. Rounds in all trauma care areas, including the Emergency Department, addressing issues, evaluating new laboratory or radiology data, answering staff questions, and serving as an adjunct to the on‑call trauma/surgical intensivist and in‑house trauma/general surgeon on call. Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, radiologic, and other diagnostic tests and studies. Writes routine orders, admissions notes, History/Physicals, tertiary assessment, progress notes, and discharge summaries per Medical Staff bylaws. Assists surgeons in overall management of trauma patients and consultations at the surgeon’s request. Accountable for patient management plan in coordination with and under the supervision of the surgeon; makes appropriate adjustments and interventions in consultation with the attending surgeon. Performs a variety of procedures as per defined credentialing; maintains accurate records for quality improvement and billing. Executes handoff process of patients with the trauma physician at the beginning and close of the shift. Participates in daily AM sign‑out rounds, multidisciplinary rounds, and discharge planning rounds. Educates patients and families regarding injuries, plan of care, and post‑discharge needs; assists with discharge planning. Provides clinical education for nurses and ancillary staff; serves as a resource and mentor for clinical staff. Maintains credentialing requirements and remains current on evidence‑based practice through ongoing education, conferences, CME activities, etc. Facilitates development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines and monitors compliance to standards of care. Participates in performance improvement meetings including Trauma Committee, Multidisciplinary Trauma Mortality and Morbidity, Trauma/Critical Care Committee. Gathers information on complications and quality indicators. Communicates with patients, consultants, and primary care providers by phone or written letters as appropriate. Experience Experience with surgical patients and trauma patient population. Credentialing to practice as PA with added skills/procedures per demonstrated competence. Preferred: 1year as Physician Assistant. Education Graduation from AMA accredited school for Physician Assistants – required.
