Medical Technologist

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Medical Technologist, located within the Clinical Pathology Lab of the Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences department. The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support by performing routine and specialized clinical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, hemostasis, flow cytometry, blood typing, cross matching, and preparation of cytological samples for evaluation by a pathologist. This position will work weekend and evening shifts.

Responsibilities

Specimen Preparation and Analysis

Accessions and prepares specimens for analysis in the areas of chemistry, coagulation, hematology, and urinalysis. Accessions and prepares cytology specimens for the pathologist on duty. Tests patient samples in chemistry, coagulation, hematology, flow cytometry, blood banking, and urinalysis stations of the lab. Performs manual cell counts on blood smears and fluids. Reports patient results to clinicians and students.

Instrument Maintenance

Runs daily quality control and calibration as needed on instruments in laboratory. Performs weekly and monthly maintenance on all laboratory instruments. Assists in troubleshooting and correcting problems that arise in procedures and instrumentation.

Miscellaneous

Answers questions regarding test ordering and test requirements. Edits/cancels incorrect orders and assists in preparing send-out tests received. Assists in filing the previous day's specimens and reports, stocking supplies, and cleaning as needed.

Qualifications

Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Medical Technologist 1, Medical Technologist 2, Senior Medical Technologist 1, or Senior Medical Technologist 2:

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.

Medical Technologist 1:

• Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related field.
  • Completion of an accredited medical technology program.
• Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional relevant experience preferred.
  • Medical Technologist State of Tennessee License and ASCP Certification (MLT or MLS) preferred.
• Progressing Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • General knowledge of proper laboratory techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical technology terminology and tools.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Knowledge of biology and chemistry.
  • Ability to interpret selected laboratory findings.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to process and document specimens.
  • Ability to perform manual and automated testing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation.

Medical Technologist 2:

• Minimum Qualifications:
  • 2 years of relevant experience
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related field
  • Completion of an accredited medical technology program or veterinary technology program
  • Medical Technologist State of Tennessee License
  • ASCP Certification (MLT or MLS)
• Progressing Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of proper laboratory techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical technology terminology and tools.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Knowledge of biology and chemistry.
  • Ability to interpret selected laboratory findings.

Senior Medical Technologist 1:

• Minimum Qualifications:
  • 4 years of relevant experience
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related field
  • Completion of an accredited medical technology program
  • ASCP Certification (MLT or MLS)
  • Medical Technologist State of Tennessee License
• Progressing Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of medical technology terminology and tools.
  • Knowledge of biology and chemistry.
  • Ability to interpret selected laboratory findings.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to process and document specimens.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Ability to proficiently perform routine and specialized clinical laboratory tests.
  • Ability to perform quality control, calibration, maintenance, and trouble-shooting of instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to train others.
  • Ability to develop, revise, and implement standard operating procedures.

Senior Medical Technologist 2:

• Minimum Qualifications:
  • 6 years of relevant experience
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related field
  • Completion of an accredited medical technology program
  • Medical Technologist State of Tennessee License
  • ASCP Certification (MLT or MLS)
• Progressing Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of medical technology terminology and tools.
  • Knowledge of biology and chemistry.
  • Ability to interpret selected laboratory findings.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to process and document specimens.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Ability to proficiently perform routine and specialized clinical laboratory tests.
  • Ability to perform quality control, calibration, maintenance, and trouble-shooting of instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to train others.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to develop, revise, and implement standard operating procedures.
