SAO Victim Witness Advocate Coordinator
The SAO Victim Witness Advocate Coordinator is a vital position within the State's Attorney's Office, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the support and services provided to victims and witnesses of crimes. This role requires a compassionate and dedicated individual who can effectively communicate and collaborate with various stakeholders, including victims, witnesses, law enforcement agencies, and legal professionals. The Victim Witness Advocate Coordinator ensures that victims and witnesses receive the necessary resources, support, and information throughout the criminal justice process. The hiring salary for this position is $55,910 - $64,709 annually; full salary range for this position is $55,910 - $96,179.
Essential Functions
- Adhere to victim/witness rights laws and regulations mandated by State statute.
- File victim/witness notifications as required by law.
- Coordinate and manage the victim witness advocacy program within the State's Attorney's Office, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services to victims and witnesses.
- Provide direct assistance and support to victims and witnesses, including crisis intervention, emotional support, and referrals to appropriate community resources.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of victims' needs, including safety concerns, counseling services, and financial assistance, and develop individualized support plans.
- Serve as a liaison between victims, witnesses, prosecutors, and law enforcement agencies, facilitating effective communication and collaboration throughout the legal proceedings.
- Inform victims and witnesses about their rights, legal processes, and available support services, ensuring their understanding and empowerment.
- Coordinate and schedule victim/witness interviews, court appearances, and other legal proceedings, ensuring the efficient and timely participation of victims/witnesses.
- Collaborate with community organizations, advocacy groups, and social service agencies to enhance the availability and accessibility of support services for victims and witnesses.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of victim/witness interactions, services provided, and case-related information, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and policies.
- Assist with/host victim witness remembrance ceremonies.
- Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and emerging trends in victim/witness advocacy, and apply this knowledge to enhance the quality and effectiveness of services provided.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of victim/witness rights, legal processes, and the criminal justice system.
- Strong understanding of trauma-informed care principles and the impact of crime on victims and witnesses.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and demonstrate empathy and sensitivity.
- Strong organizational and coordination abilities, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Proficiency in maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information with discretion.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating effectively with colleagues, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations.
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in crisis situations.
- Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of word processing, database management, and other relevant software applications.
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree;
- Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice, or a related field is preferred.
- Previous experience in victim/witness advocacy, crisis intervention, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws related to victims' rights and services is preferred.
- Training or certification in victim advocacy, trauma-informed care, or related areas is an asset.
Additional Requirements: Must successfully pass background investigation with favorable results; Must pass a pre-employment drug test. Physical and Environmental Conditions: Work requires no unusual demand for physical effort. Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior.
