Assistant United States Attorney (Civil Division)

Assistant U.S. Attorneys are needed for the Civil Division of the Eastern District of California in the Sacramento and Fresno offices. Applicants will work with criminal and civil colleagues, supported by a dedicated staff of paralegals, investigators, auditors, and other professionals. Responsibilities Affirmative Civil Enforcement : Enforcement investigations and litigation involving healthcare fraud, procurement fraud, grant fraud, financial fraud, pharmaceutical diversion, wildlife recovery actions, and civil rights enforcement. Asset Recovery : Forfeiture of proceeds and instruments of crime, enforcement of judgments and restitution for victims, collection of debts owed to the United States, and protection of U.S. interests in bankruptcy proceedings. Defense : Defending the United States, federal agencies, and federal employees in lawsuits including employment‑discrimination, medical malpractice, personal injury, tort actions, Administrative Procedure Act cases, environmental challenges under NEPA, Social Security, Medicare, Bivens civil rights actions, and immigration matters. Assignments will increase in complexity as training and experience progress. Requirements U.S. citizenship or national status. J.D. degree and active membership in any U.S. jurisdiction bar in good standing. Residence in the district or within 25 miles of the appointed location. Successful background adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax, and drug testing. Selective Service registration or exemption for male applicants born after December 31, 1959. Preferred Qualifications At least three to five years of litigation experience with substantial responsibility for discovery, trial, and appeals. Analytical ability, precise written and oral communication, strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment. Ability to work independently on legal research, writing, and daily correspondence. Computer literacy, including electronic court filing, e‑mail, and word processing. Compensation and Benefits Sacramento : Pay range $85,075 to $197,100 (includes 29.76% locality pay). Fresno : Pay range $77,135 to $180,986 (includes 17.65% locality pay). Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Relocation expenses are not authorized. Occasional travel may be required.
