Safety Technician

The Fleet Safety Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, inspection, and repair of fleet safety and technology equipment across the company's tractors, trailers, and related fleet assets. They support critical safety systems including Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), in-cab cameras, telematics devices, and other onboard technologies that promote regulatory compliance and operational efficiency. They perform hands-on equipment installations, diagnostics, inspections, and inventory management while maintaining accurate maintenance and equipment records. This position serves as a key resource for drivers, independent contractors, Fleet Safety, Maintenance, and other internal departments by providing technical support and professional customer service. 

Responsibilities

• Install, remove, configure, troubleshoot, test, and maintain ELDs, in-cab cameras, telematics systems, and other fleet safety technology equipment.
• Perform equipment installations and repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications, company procedures, and applicable DOT regulations.
• Diagnose equipment, electrical, wiring, and connectivity issues using hand tools, testing equipment, and diagnostic devices.
• Inspect returned equipment and components to verify functionality and determine repair, replacement, or reinstallation requirements.
• Conduct vehicle, equipment, and safety-related inspections, including DOT-related inspection activities within the scope of the position.
• Perform yard checks and identify vehicles requiring repair, maintenance, or additional inspection prior to being placed into service.
• Maintain accurate records related to equipment installations, repairs, inspections, removals, and preventive maintenance activities.
• Enter completed work orders, equipment changes, inspection results, and maintenance details into fleet management and maintenance systems.
• Manage inventory levels of safety and technology equipment, including cameras, ELDs, wiring harnesses, mounting hardware, tools, and replacement components.
• Provide technical support and professional customer service to drivers, independent contractors, and internal departments regarding equipment operation and troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with Fleet Safety, Maintenance, Driver Orientation, Recruiting, and other operational teams to ensure vehicle readiness and equipment compliance.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while adhering to company safety policies and workplace standards.
• Travel to company terminals and fleet locations as needed to support equipment installations, repairs, inspections, and special projects.
• Maintain regular and dependable attendance.
• All other duties as assigned to meet evolving business needs.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
• Certification/Licensure: Valid driver's license required with the ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.
• Previous experience working with heavy-duty trucks, trailers, fleet equipment, vehicle safety systems, telematics, automotive electrical systems, or related technologies preferred.
• Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and resolve equipment-related issues.
• Knowledge of electrical systems, wiring, connectors, and basic electrical troubleshooting techniques preferred.
• Ability to use common hand tools, testing equipment, diagnostic devices, and computer-based maintenance systems.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build positive working relationships across departments and with drivers.
• Demonstrated discretion and confidentiality in handling and protecting sensitive information.
• Technical: Proficient with common office technologies, including Windows PCs, Microsoft O365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and web conferencing (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.)
• Environment: Comfort commuting to/from and working in a 100% on-site setting (listed in this posting), with travel for related meetings/events.
