Veterinary Extern - General Practice

An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners. Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. The externship duration ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. The stipend amount at Southwest Veterinary Hospital is $1,500.
