The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.Salary Range$146,400.00 - $241,600.00Target Openings1What Is the Opportunity?The Senior Counsel position is responsible for providing a broad range of cost-effective, high quality legal services within Corporate Litigation, and more specifically, our eDiscovery Group. The position includes management of litigation involving Travelers and its subsidiaries, as well as advising internal clients on issues related to electronic discovery and information governance more broadly. This role will help support increasing demand for eDiscovery technological support and will provide partnership as new technology is acquired, tested, and implemented. This attorney will also provide advice regarding eDiscovery and information governance issues. Corporate Litigation manages non-claim matters pertaining to all business units, which vary in complexity. These matters may include actions involving the company’s underwriting or business practices; shareholder litigation; disputes with agents; litigation involving the company’s investments and real estate; bankruptcy and premium collection matters; and litigation involving the Company’s intellectual property.What Will You Do?Manage litigation on behalf of the company, oversee outside counsel and drive strategy.Provide legal advice and counsel to internal stakeholders and senior management within respective lines of business pertaining to eDiscovery issues and litigation issues.Research legal principles and precedents within area of specialization or expertise.Proactively identify and communicate risk to clients and provide recommendations on mitigation.Draft, negotiate and execute legal documents.Maintain awareness of judicial climate and legal developments.Build and maintain strong internal and external client relationships. Act as a mentor and coach to less senior attorneys and/or paralegal/staff.May prepare or review annual legal fees budget for assigned matters. Review invoices from outside counsel and recommend adjustments. Within authority level, approve invoices.Make effective use of technology and automation to gain efficiencies in the practice of law.Work collaboratively to build and maintain strong relationships with internal clients and other professionals across Legal Services.Perform other duties as assigned.What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?Ten years of prior legal experience as a practicing attorneyExperience in insurance coverage litigationDemonstrated experience with litigation managementStrong analytical abilities and oral communication skillsStrong interest in eDiscovery, technology and information governance issuesUnderstanding of claim and underwriting principles and the ability to adapt those to litigationDemonstrated knowledge of insurance policies and coveragesExperience in project management and delivery of project from concept to executioneDiscovery experience is preferredWhat is a Must Have?Juris Doctorate or equivalent International legal degree; graduate of an accredited law school7 years of prior legal experience as a practicing attorney.Active license in good standing to practice law in the state(s) in which representation is required.What Is in It for You?Health Insurance: Employees and their eligible family members – including spouses, domestic partners, and children – are eligible for coverage from the first day of employment.Retirement: Travelers matches your 401(k) contributions dollar-for-dollar up to your first 5% of eligible pay, subject to an annual maximum.
