Low Voltage Field Technician

Position Summary We are looking for a skilled, dependable, and highly organized Low Voltage Field Technician to join our field operations team. We are not simply a low-voltage contractor. We are a full-service IT, Cybersecurity, Infrastructure, and Technology Services company, which means this position offers considerably more room for technical growth than a traditional cabling or security technician role. The technician will work across structured cabling, fiber optics, access control, surveillance, relays, and related infrastructure while being exposed to the networking, IT, cybersecurity, and systems that ultimately sit on top of that infrastructure. For someone who wants to develop beyond installation work, there are significant opportunities for cross-training and advancement into networking, systems, cybersecurity, infrastructure engineering, project management, and other technical disciplines. This is a hands-on position for someone who takes pride in doing work correctly, cleanly, and thoughtfully. The ideal candidate is technically capable, mechanically inclined, self-managed, and comfortable working independently while also taking direction from senior technical leadership. This is not a position for someone who simply wants to “pull cable.” We are looking for a technician who thinks about the complete installation: how equipment will be mounted, how cables will be routed, how the system will be serviced five years from now, how the finished work will look, how the technology integrates with the rest of the environment, and whether the installation represents the quality of work we expect our customers to receive. Technical Experience Candidates should have practical field experience with several or all of the following: Structured cabling systems, including Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, coaxial, and other low-voltage cabling Cable routing, dressing, labeling, testing, troubleshooting, and certification Copper termination, including RJ45 connectors, keystone jacks, patch panels, and related hardware Fiber-optic cabling Running and protecting fiber in commercial environments Fiber termination Fiber testing and troubleshooting Understanding fiber types, connectors, polarity, loss, and proper handling procedures Access control systems Door strikes Magnetic locks Request-to-exit devices Door position switches Card readers Controllers Power supplies Relays Surveillance and IP camera systems Camera mounting and positioning Network-connected surveillance equipment NVR and related infrastructure Low-voltage relays, dry contacts, triggers, and basic control circuits Reading wiring diagrams and understanding basic electrical and low-voltage schematics Troubleshooting field wiring and system integration issues Experience with additional systems such as intrusion detection, intercoms, audiovisual systems, automation, networking, wireless systems, or building controls is a plus. Experience with IT and networking is also valuable but not required for an otherwise strong candidate who wants to learn. Tools & Installation Skills The technician must be comfortable safely and competently using professional construction and installation tools, including: Cordless drills Hammer drills Rotary hammers Impact drivers Reciprocating saws Oscillating multi-tools Hole saws Masonry bits Step bits Fish tapes and fish rods Cable pulling equipment Ladders Hand tools Crimpers and termination tools Cable testers and electronic testing equipment The technician should understand how to select the correct tool, fastener, anchor, drill bit, mounting method, and installation technique based on the material and environment. We expect our technicians to work carefully around finished surfaces and existing customer property. Being able to make something work is important. Being able to make it work without unnecessarily destroying everything around it is even better. Responsibilities The Low Voltage Field Technician will: Install low-voltage cabling and systems in commercial and residential environments Run, terminate, label, test, and troubleshoot copper and fiber-optic cabling Install and service access control systems Install and service surveillance systems Wire and troubleshoot relays, contacts, power supplies, and related control devices Mount equipment securely and professionally Maintain neat and organized cable pathways, racks, panels, closets, and work areas Follow plans, drawings, specifications, and project instructions Identify installation problems and develop practical solutions in the field Coordinate with project leadership when field conditions differ from drawings or expectations Protect customer property and maintain clean work areas Clean the work area before leaving a job site Maintain tools, equipment, materials, and company property Accurately document work performed Record labor and time worked against the appropriate project, ticket, or task Document materials used when required Record technical details, device locations, cable identifiers, test results, and system changes Take appropriate photographs of completed installations and important field conditions Communicate progress, problems, delays, and material requirements promptly Complete assigned work without requiring constant supervision Personal Characteristics Technical ability is important, but how the technician approaches the work is equally important. We are looking for someone who is: Organized — tools, materials, cables, notes, and work areas should have a purpose and a place. Clean — finished work should look professional, and job sites should be left cleaner than they were found. Thoughtful — consider what happens before drilling the hole, cutting the wall, pulling the cable, or mounting the device. Self-managed — able to understand the objective, develop a plan, execute the work, and communicate when assistance is needed. Responsible — owns their assignments and follows through. Diligent — verifies that the job is actually complete rather than assuming it works. Detail-oriented — labeling, documentation, cable management, alignment, testing, and finish quality matter. Resourceful — capable of solving unusual field problems without immediately becoming stuck. Professional — respectful of customers, coworkers, job sites, and company standards. Curious — interested in understanding not only how something is installed, but why it works. Willing to learn — technology changes constantly, and there is always another skill to develop. Documentation & Accountability Our technicians are expected to document their work as part of the job—not as an afterthought. Candidates should already be accustomed to working within a service, ticketing, project-management, or time-tracking system and should be comfortable documenting: Arrival and departure times Labor performed Work completed Work remaining Problems encountered Troubleshooting performed Materials used Equipment installed Relevant serial numbers and device information Test results Photographs Recommendations or follow-up work The technician must be able to provide clear enough documentation that another technician can understand what occurred without needing a verbal explanation. If the work took eight hours, we should be able to understand what happened during those eight hours. Leadership & Mentorship This position will work directly under our Chief Fabricator, an extraordinarily experienced technical craftsman whose abilities span low-voltage systems, electronics, fabrication, construction, troubleshooting, engineering, and the art of figuring out how to make things work when conventional answers fall short. Calling him an all-around savant and genius is only partially a joke. For the right person, working alongside him represents a rare opportunity to learn techniques, methods, and practical problem-solving skills that are difficult to obtain from a classroom, certification program, or YouTube video. Someone who is curious, observant, humble enough to learn, and ambitious enough to absorb everything available to them could gain an enormous amount of knowledge in this position. They understand the assignment, think through the installation, organize what they need, execute the work carefully, test everything, clean up after themselves, document what they did, and communicate the result. When they encounter something they do not know, they ask intelligent questions, learn from the answer, and ideally never need to ask the same question twice. They gradually become capable of handling more complicated work, making better technical decisions, and taking greater ownership of projects. Most importantly, they care about the finished product.
