Medical Director

Summary Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care Physician provides direct patient/resident care, including comprehensive management of the physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the veteran and families. The physician collaborates with the Admissions Coordinator to ensure safe and appropriate CLC admissions, maximize utilization of CLC beds, and maintain transparency in the admission process. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) specified in the job announcement. Applicants who are pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected, but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements Citizenship: be a citizen of the United States (U.S.) in accordance with Section38U.S.C.7402(c). Non‑citizens: may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens according to 38U.S.C.7407(a). Education: Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools include LCME‑accredited schools of medicine and AOA‑accredited schools of osteopathic medicine. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2), the medical school must meet or have met the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated. Licensure/Registration: a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia, with current registration if required for continuing active licensure. Residency Training: successfully completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program, or one‑year internship followed by at least two years of independent practice under a full and unrestricted license. Non‑U.S. programs may count if followed by a minimum of three years of independent U.S. practice (including U.S. fellowships). Board Certification: generally not required for VA employment, but may be required in specific circumstances such as supervising medical students or residents, holding faculty status with an affiliated medical school, or meeting VHA policy requirements. Certification must be maintained for the duration of such roles. Grandfathering Provision: employees in VHA under permanent, appropriate, and legal placement at the effective date of the qualification standard are considered to have met all basic requirements. Employees who do not meet all basic or assignment‑specific requirements but met the qualifications applicable to the position at appointment are given specific provisions for transfer, temporary appointment, and re‑entry. Preferred Experience: board certification in Internal Medicine – Geriatrics or Hospice & Palliative Medicine. Physical Requirements: be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, and without hazard to self or others. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard, please visit Duties Provide competitive compensation under the VA Total Rewards program, including salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases. Offer 50–55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days of paid absence for CME). Offer traditional federal pension after 5 years of vesting, a federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution, and federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care insurance. Maintain one full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory; provide CME reimbursement of up to $1,000 per year (full‑time with board certification). Receive free malpractice liability protection with tail coverage. Work under no physician employment contract and with no significant restriction on moonlighting. Oversight of MOD staff and operations, including supervision of CLC physicians, nurse practitioners, and support staff. Lead weekly meetings and participate in performance improvement activities, including mortality and morbidity reviews, peer reviews, and occurrence screens. Prepare for surveys and support the teaching mission at the CLC in coordination with the Medical Facility and external teaching organizations. Participate in service and/or medical center committees as assigned and comply with all quality performance measures and improvement programs. Exercise full professional responsibilities for findings, interpretations, decisions, recommendations, and reports in accordance with clinical privileges. Meet all clinical performance measures and contribute to higher‑level management functions for GEC through participation and planning in operational boards, councils, and committees within NMVAHCS, VISN, and VHA. Manage personnel functions, including credentialing, privileging, scope of practice definition, professional practice evaluations, performance evaluations, and maintenance of continuing education for staff physicians. Oversee development and completion of performance standards and appraisals for direct report staff. Address grievances, administer disciplinary actions, and nominate incentive awards concerning GEC. Ensure successful external reviews, including The Joint Commission (TJC) and CLC oversight reviews, with implementation of approved recommendations. Provide clinical oversight for MDS findings and process improvements through board reviews and approved actions. Perform additional duties assigned by the Deputy Chief of Staff or Chief of Staff.
