Highway Christian Academy is seeking a caring, energetic, and dependable Preschool Assistant to join our growing school in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

This is a 10-month, school-year position supporting teachers and children ages 3–5. Unlike a traditional year-round childcare environment, this role follows the school-year calendar while offering the opportunity to help young learners grow academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

As a Preschool Assistant, you will work alongside the classroom teacher to support engaging learning experiences, encourage positive relationships, and share your faith through everyday interactions.

What You’ll Do

As a Preschool Assistant, you will help the classroom teacher maintain a warm, engaging, and well-organized environment where children feel safe, valued, and excited to learn.

You’ll:

• Assist the classroom teacher with daily lessons, learning activities, and classroom routines.
• Help prepare and organize classroom materials, learning centers, and supplies.
• Support children during teacher-guided activities, small-group learning, play, movement, and creative experiences.
• Reinforce early academic skills and encourage language development, independence, kindness, and cooperation.
• Model Biblical principles and Christian values through your words, actions, and interactions.
• Help children follow classroom expectations and practice positive social-emotional skills.
• Provide attentive supervision during classroom activities, outdoor play, meals, and transitions.
• Assist children with age-appropriate personal care needs, including toileting, handwashing, and dressing, as needed.
• Help maintain a clean, orderly, and welcoming classroom.
• Share observations and concerns with the classroom teacher to support each child’s growth and well-being.
• Communicate warmly and professionally with families while directing questions about student progress or classroom concerns to the classroom teacher.
• Collaborate with teachers, school leadership, and fellow staff members.
• Participate in required training, professional development, school activities, and the broader HCA community.

• Enjoys an active classroom that includes hands-on learning, movement, and play.
• Is willing to assist with the practical, everyday needs of young children.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience working with preschool-age children preferred.
• Early childhood coursework, certification, or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Previous experience as a classroom assistant, preschool assistant, or childcare provider preferred.
• A pastoral reference is required.
