Airfield Operations Assistant

Under direction of an Airfield Operations Officer, oversees and coordinates airfield activity to ensure the safe and efficient operation of airfield areas and compliance with Federal Aviation Agency and Airport Board rules and regulations. When assigned as Lead Assistant Officer monitors the workload of the Airfield Operations Agents and directs their duties as necessary on behalf of the Airfield Operations Officer.

What you will be doing:

• Conducts required inspections of the Air Operations Area (AOA) which includes airfield runways, taxiways, terminal ramps, cargo ramps, hangar ramps, lighting and security to ensure compliance with FAR 139; maintains records of required inspection.
• Reports observed discrepancies to appropriate parties; may remove debris from airfield pavements, follows up to ensure corrective action(s) have been taken.
• Closes and opens portion of airfield as necessary to ensure a safe and efficient airfield operation; and authorizes the issuance of NOTAM's and aeronautical information.
• Coordinates between airfield users and FAA control tower for inspections, tours, maintenance, construction and other airfield activity; provides airfield-related escorts as required.
• Conducts wildlife hazard inspections and dispersal; maintains records on wildlife hazard management.
• Reviews changes to regulations, procedures and instructions from publications, reports and memoranda; follows prescribed procedures.
• Documents reportable incidents on assigned shift; compiles data, inspection records, and other information into routine and special reports for management review.
• Responds to real or potential emergencies, assists the on-the-scene commander as directed and oversees emergency responder activities on all AOA incidents to ensure safe airfield operations.
• Monitor construction and maintenance activity to ensure compliance with CFR Part 139 and Part 77 standards. Represents Airfield Operations interests in regard to airfield construction and maintenance projects.
• Monitors and reports long on-board aircraft times and supports customers during Irregular Operations (IROPS).
• Coordinates with Airport Stakeholders when operational activities impact their leaseholds.
• Responsible for enforcement of Airport Driver Handbook
• Conducts Continuous Friction Measurements (CFME) tests for maintenance and winter weather, reports results to ATC, issues appropriate NOTAMs and work orders, and disseminates results to Airfield Operations and ETAM.
• Monitors two-way radio communications using Airport Board and FAA Air Traffic Control (ATC) radio frequencies; coordinates vehicular movement within the AOA via FAA ATC radio frequencies when necessary; communicates with various airport and Airport Board personnel via radio, phone, or in person.
• Complete full scope of training consisting of classroom, Airfield Operations Agent, and Assistant Airfield Operations Officer duties within 3 months of employment
• Training involves learning the complete DFW Airport layout, Air Operations Area (AOA), Airport Board policies, and Airfield Operations procedures, along with the following specific software systems: Veoci, Windows Platform, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) NOTAM Manager.
• Administers and documents the field and office training for new Assistant Airfield Operations Officers and re-currency while on shift.

What you need:

• Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.
• Three (3) years of aviation/airfield operations experience at a FAR 139 certified large hub airport, OR
• Two (2) years of aviation/airfield experience in a position of responsibility at a medium or small hub airport.
• Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
• Ability to pass a medical physical examination.
• Ability to pass an annual firearm safety course.
• Ability to pass a hunter safety course.
• Possession of a valid Class C driver's license.
• Ability to obtain Department of Homeland Security Customs and Border Protection (CBP) security access clearance within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for CBP security access clearance upon each CBP security access renewal.
• This is a designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport's Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass a drug test prior to employment and to submit to drug screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Maintain the ability and flexibility to work all shifts and needed and assigned by supervisor or manager based on department needs.
• Maintain the ability to work extended shifts hours (overtime) in order to ensure adequate resources are available to sustain the operations on the airfield.
• Knowledge of principles and procedures involved in the operation of a FAR 139 certificated airport.
• Knowledge of the applicable federal rules and regulations affecting the safe and efficient operation of a FAR Part 139 certificated airport.
• Knowledge of the physical facilities and layout of an airport and of aircraft configurations in accordance with FAA standards.
• Ability to read, understand, interpret and explain rules and regulations.
• Ability to gather, analyze and evaluate facts and to prepare and present concise oral and written reports.
• Ability to work under stressful conditions, analyze situations and make decisions rapidly.
• Ability to deal courteously, tactfully and effectively with tenants, construction workers and other employees.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

Effort:

• Works within the Air Operations Area of the airport.
• Drives a vehicle for prolonged periods of time.
• Exchanges information by telephone, two-way radio and in person.
• Uses wildlife hazard management tools (e.g. shotgun).
• Drives to locations on Airport property.
• Uses color perception in following driving regulations on the AOA.
