They will provide direct patient/participant care for breastfeeding mother-baby day. The Lactation Consultant will report to the WIC Program Manager.Specific DutiesPromotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.Manage patient queueFollow-up with patients by phoneDevelop and provide breastfeeding information to patientsCommunicate with providers regarding patient condition and document care givenAssist in maintaining & tracking breastfeeding supplies inventorySelects & develops breastfeeding education materialsParticipates in professional meetings, trainings, and continuing educationParticipates in local meetings and initiativesPromote breastfeeding as the norm to all pregnant and postpartum patients and their familiesProvides WIC participant centered education when counseling participantsIdentify high risk WIC participants in need of an referral to the WIC dietitianProvides follow-up breastfeeding support to WIC participantsActs on all referrals and warm hand-offs from other WIC staff regarding complex breastfeeding situations beyond their scope of practiceAssesses and counsels WIC mothers and their infants with complex breastfeeding situationsDemonstrate, use, and issue breast pumps to breastfeeding participantsAttends staff meetings as assignedPromotes breastfeeding as the norm to all pregnant and postpartum WIC participants and their familiesComplete and review computer forms and/or data entry into computerTravels to different sites as neededPerforms other duties as assignedQualificationsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)Bilingual English/Spanish preferredProvide copy of Basic Life Support certificateValid California driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and personal transportationKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of principles and practices of social work and counseling techniquesKnowledge of office management principles and practicesSkill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the publicSkill in public speakingAbility to write reports, correctly reflecting intervention and document progressAbility to utilize basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PublisherTYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Requires frequent walking and standing for prolonged periods of time. Requires sitting for prolonged periods of time. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity necessary to utilize computer keyboard in daily activities. Requires exposure to communicable diseases. Requires ability to drive automobile or similar transportation to attend various clinics and other functions. Must be able to occasionally lift or push up to 50 pounds.TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:Exposure to communicable diseases, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a public health and clinic environment.
