Shift Details

32-hour days with some weeknight and weekend call responsibilities.

Essential Functions

• Create assignments as needed and communicate operational needs with the OR charge nurse/practice leader.
• Ensure smooth operation of surgical instrumentation in perioperative services throughout the day and monitor throughput.
• Maintain Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification along with necessary continuing education.
• Assist the supervisor in setting up continuing education and in-services for the central sterile department.
• Ensure proper operation of autoclave units prior to daily use.
• Order daily supplies and manage supply inventory effectively.
• Conduct biological and chemical tests at the beginning of each day shift and record results appropriately.
• Inspect gas and steam autoclaves for visible malfunctions and report findings to the Central Sterile Supervisor.
• Utilize knowledge of sterilization principles to properly wrap or package items for sterilization.
• Process all items using either ethylene oxide or steam sterilization techniques.
• Assist with processing department supply charges and perform related clerical tasks as needed.
• Collaborate closely with the Central Service Supervisor and assist with the orientation of new personnel.
• Apply aseptic techniques in all daily work assignments.
• Perform general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, storage cabinets, and all storage areas.
• Store all supplies and equipment, ensuring the Central Services dispensing racks are fully stocked.
• Possess knowledge regarding handling and care of instruments, tray preparation, and special procedure items.
• Perform tray assemblage, proper packaging, and preparation of applicable supplies for sterilization.
• Monitor sterility dates on supplies effectively.
• Properly load, operate, and clean all sterilizers, gas and steam, as well as general equipment, adhering to biological and chemical control tests as required.
• Restock patient care unit supply carts and reconcile charges when necessary, and report lost charges to the Nurse Manager.
• Participate in departmental performance improvement activities.
• Clean scopes by hand and utilize the medivator process for high-level disinfection.
• Assist in ordering supplies to maintain appropriate inventory levels, ensuring smooth patient flow and turnover.
• Perform any other duties as assigned, including assistance to other departments when requested.

Physical Requirements

Candidate must be able to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or less than 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Frequent actions required include reaching (extending hands and arms in any direction) and handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or working with hands). Frequent stooping (bending forward and downward) is also necessary.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education

High school diploma (or equivalent) is required.

Required Certification

Registered Central Service Technician certification is required.

Minimum Work Experience

A minimum of 6 months of experience in central sterile processing is required.

Required Skills

The candidate must demonstrate a strong work ethic, comprehensive knowledge of standards as set forth by the IAHCSMM, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively.
