Sr Shop Diesel Mechanic

Job Summary Sr. Shop Diesel Technician – responsible for DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, and complex repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty trucks and trailers. Must work at a Cox location – no remote option. Flexible work schedule; variable hourly compensation from $32.26 to $48.41 per hour, with potential for commissions and incentive programs. Responsibilities Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures. Independently determine parts required for each job and interact with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them. Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment. Apply knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform the job; work with, understand, and evaluate technical information. Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations. Manage concurrent assigned tasks, making effective judgments when prioritizing work activities and time allocations. Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments, behave consistently, keep sensitive information confidential, and adhere to ethical and professional standards. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment. Occasionally travel to perform work at customer locations. Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment. Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks. Document work according to company standards and upload pictures of work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using company‑issued devices and/or the Karmak application. Accurately complete DOT forms and all other documentation in a timely fashion. Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to standard repair times. Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings. Perform all work in compliance with organizational safety, health, and environmental policies, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT. Participate and complete all company‑required safety training. Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks; conduct safety checks and daily pre/post‑trip inspections. Perform minor adjustments and repairs on various truck equipment, including electrical, brake, cooling, starter/alternator, fan clutch, engine electronics, diesel steering, engines (gas and diesel), transmissions (manual and automatic), clutches, and differentials. Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures. Diagnose, adjust, and repair truck equipment, including electrical, brake, cooling, air conditioning, fan clutch, manufacturer electronics, diesel steering, engines, transmissions, clutches, and differentials. Identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives. Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using handheld computers and pressure gauges. Assist Shop Diesel Technician I with diagnostics. Support Shop Diesel Technician I/II in obtaining correct parts for each job. Advise Shop Diesel Technicians I and II on technical issues. Make recommendations based on identified problems and alternatives. Assist Shop Diesel Technician I/II with diagnostics. Perform advanced diagnostics and triage complicated repairs by Shop Diesel Technicians I/II. Requirements High School Diploma or GED and 5 years of experience in a related field. Alternate combinations may include any degree or certification beyond high school and 3 years’ experience, or 7 years’ experience in a related field. Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties. Obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification T8 (PMI) within 18 months. Be at least 21 years old due to interstate commerce regulations. Skills & Abilities Understand implications of new information for present and future problem‑solving and decision‑making. Lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor. Maintain physical endurance over long periods, including repetitive tasks. Communicate information succinctly and organized; engage in effective two‑way communication with individuals and groups. Determine the type of tools and equipment needed. Judge accurately which of several objects is closer or farther away, or the distance between objects. Use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Certifications Required: ASE T8 (PMI) certification; ASE 608/609 certification*. Preferred: ASE T2 (Diesel Engines); ASE T3 (Drivetrain); ASE T4 (Brakes); ASE T5 (Suspension); ASE T6 (Electrical & Electronic Systems); ASE T7 (HVAC); ASE A8 (Engine Performance); ASE L1 (Advanced Engine Performance Specialist); ASE L2 (Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist).
