Shop Diesel Mechanic II

Job Summary Shop Diesel Technician II will perform licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and follow‑up repairs, light mechanical/hydraulic/electrical and electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. The technician may conduct advanced diagnostics and repairs under supervision and continues to learn additional advanced mechanical skills under guidance of a senior technician. Successful completion of all company policies and performance metrics is required. Duties Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures. Determine parts required for each job and coordinate with the Shop Parts Department. Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in cleanup at the end of each day. Apply knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform tasks; evaluate technical information related to the job. Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, and satisfy expectations. Manage concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work activities and time allocation. Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to ethical and professional standards. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections and follow‑up repairs on light, medium and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment. Occasionally travel to customer locations to perform work. Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks and equipment lubrication. Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts and jacks. Document work according to company standards; upload pictures, parts used and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using a company device and/or Karmak application. Accurately complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely fashion. Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to standard repair times. Communicate with Shop Manager and support team for repair estimate approvals, purchase order retrieval and discussion of RO findings. Perform all work in compliance with safety, health and environmental policies, and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT). Participate in and complete all company‑required safety training. Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks; conduct safety checks and daily pre/post‑trip inspections. Perform minor adjustments and repairs on truck equipment including electrical, brake and cooling systems, starters/alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, etc. Adhere to company policies, processes and procedures. Diagnose, adjust, and repair truck equipment using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges. Assist Shop Diesel Technician I with diagnostics. Requirements High School Diploma/GED with 3 years’ experience in a related field. A higher degree or 5 years of experience may also qualify. Valid driver’s license required; must maintain a Driver Qualification File. Valid DOT Medical Card or ability to obtain one within 72 hours of hire. Possess a set of hand tools necessary to perform required duties. Complete all company‑required training. Skills & Abilities Understand the implications of new information for current and future problem‑solving and decision‑making. Lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor. Endure repetitive tasks without tiring. Communicate information succinctly and organize thoughts; engage in effective two‑way communication. Determine the type of tools and equipment needed for a task. Judge distances between objects accurately. Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternatives and solutions. Compensation USD 26.73 – 40.10 per hour. Hourly pay ranges may vary based on location and candidate qualifications. The position may also be eligible for additional compensation, including commission, incentive programs and other variable pay.
