Job Summary Perform work involved with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal, and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities, drive and operate line trucks and associated auxiliary equipment. All job duties apply to overhead and underground equipment and facilities. The Line Mechanic C builds upon the skills, abilities and knowledge learned as a Line Mechanic D (or equivalent). Line Mechanic C Responsibilities Assemble, install, maintain, remove and inspect overhead and underground facilities including conductors, cables, transformers, fixtures, structures and other equipment under immediate or general supervision. After completing C‑100 (or equivalent experience), work on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 volts under general supervision; assist with secondary voltage work up to 600 volts under immediate supervision. After completing C‑100, test, de‑energize, ground, splice and terminate URD cable, troubleshoot, repair and energize URD cable and equipment under immediate or general supervision. After completing C‑200, work on conductors and equipment energized up to 600 volts under general supervision; use volt meters, amp meters, ground meggers, continuity testers and other electrical test equipment. After completing C‑200, cover up stationary tied‑in (cannot transfer) primary conductors and equipment under direct supervision. After completing C‑300, cover up, transfer or move primary conductors and equipment under direct supervision. After completing C‑400, perform the same duties as outlined in the B classification during the first twelve months, progressing from direct to immediate supervision as skill level dictates. Replace fuses and operate switching and sectionalizing devices energized at any voltage under general supervision. Build and erect equipment mountings (e.g., regulator and transformer platforms) and build overhead transformer installations. Conduct proper tagging procedures while performing switching of energized circuits. Perform inspection and troubleshooting of lines. Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned. Direct the work of employees assigned to assist. Complete Monthly Apprentice Cards and submit to local supervision for review. Direct, Immediate, and General Supervision Definitions Direct Supervision: A qualified person works hands‑on with the employee. Immediate Supervision: A qualified person is near the structure/equipment and maintains constant visual or verbal contact. General Supervision: An employee of higher classification with knowledge of the task, not necessarily on site. Line Mechanic C Qualifications Education: High school diploma or GED. Experience: Minimum of one year of distribution electrical power line work, OR one year of related line experience defined as a one‑year electrical power line school certificate plus at least 16 weeks internship, OR an associate degree from an electrical power line school with at least 16 weeks internship. Must have performed all duties of Line Mechanic D or equivalent, and qualify through demonstration, examination, or performance appraisal as determined by the company. Must show ability and desire to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for Line Mechanic A, qualifying through demonstration, examination, or appraisal. Must acquire within the timeframe established by the company the qualifications necessary for the next higher classification or vacate the current job classification. A physical abilities assessment is required. Licenses/Certifications Valid Class A CDL required. Line Mechanic B Requirements Education: High school diploma or GED. Experience: Minimum of two years as Line Mechanic C or equivalent. Valid Class A CDL required. Line Mechanic A Requirements Education: High school diploma or GED. Experience: Successful completion of apprentice lineman training, including B‑200 certification written test with a score of 80% or higher and hands‑on demonstrations; external candidates must have a minimum of four years line work experience and successful completion of the journeyman pre‑assessment. Valid Class A CDL required. Drive Time Requirement The successful candidate must live or be willing to relocate within 45 miles of the Columbus NE Service Center (4909 Westerville Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43231).
