The unit has a total of 59 beds with patient ratios varying between 1:4 to 1:5 on days and 1:5 to 1:6 on nights. There are 3 techs available when the unit is full. The equipment used includes bipaps, high flow oxygen, vapotherm, alaris pumps, cardiac drips, heparin drips, insulin drips, and peritoneal dialysis. The documentation system in use is Meditech. Scheduling requirements include working every other weekend. Floating may be required between PCU units or to medical-surgical floors. Patient experience standards include hourly rounding during the day and every two hours at night, along with adherence to AIDET and maintaining communication boards. Certifications required for this position are BLS and ACLS. The dress code for this position is black scrubs. Procedures performed on the unit include peritoneal dialysis, thoracentesis, paracentesis, chest tube insertions, dobhoff/NG tube insertions, and central line dressing changes. Staff are dedicated to creating a caring and family-like culture with great teamwork. Self-scheduling is utilized, with schedules made available for four weeks in advance. Travel nursing professionals often choose to extend their contracts after their first assignment due to the supportive environment.
