Senior Commissioning Engineer

Job Description

This is an opportunity to join a growing consulting practice focused on building performance, commissioning, and energy optimization. The successful candidate will play a key role in expanding regional operations, developing client relationships, leading technical teams, and delivering complex commissioning projects across a diverse portfolio of facilities.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development & Client Leadership

• Grow and manage a regional portfolio of commissioning and building performance projects.
\n
• Develop relationships with building owners, developers, public agencies, engineering firms, architects, and construction partners.
\n
• Represent the organization at industry events, conferences, and client presentations.
\n
• Lead proposal development, interview preparation, and project pursuit strategies.
\n
• Serve as the primary point of contact for key client accounts and identify opportunities for repeat and expanded business.
\n

Team Leadership & Practice Development

\n
• Lead, mentor, and develop commissioning and engineering professionals.
\n
• Establish technical standards, quality expectations, and best practices.
\n
• Support recruiting, onboarding, and staff development efforts.
\n
• Help build scalable processes and operational frameworks to support growth.
\n

Technical Project Oversight

\n
• Oversee commissioning projects ranging from new construction to existing building retrofits.
\n
• Lead commissioning planning, system testing, issue resolution, and project closeout activities.
\n
• Review construction documents, specifications, equipment submittals, and installation practices.
\n
• Evaluate building systems to confirm performance aligns with project requirements and operational goals.
\n
• Review and approve technical reports and client deliverables.
\n

Project Coordination

• Collaborate with project managers, contractors, design professionals, facility operators, and other stakeholders.
\n
• Facilitate commissioning meetings and coordinate project activities.
\n
• Support startup, testing, troubleshooting, and performance verification of building systems.
\n
• Assist in identifying and resolving technical and operational issues during construction and occupancy phases.
\n

Field Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

\n
• Conducting site visits, system inspections, and functional performance testing.
\n
• Participating in coordination meetings with project stakeholders.
\n
• Observing equipment startup and operational testing.
\n
• Accessing mechanical, electrical, and rooftop equipment as required.
\n
• Working within occupied facilities while maintaining professionalism and adherence to site-specific requirements.
\n
• Occasional overnight travel within the region (typically less than 20%).
\n

Qualifications

Required Experience

\n
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Building Sciences, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline. Advanced degrees are a plus.
\n
• Minimum 10 years of commissioning, building systems, or related consulting experience.
\n
• Demonstrated experience leading projects and managing technical teams.
\n
• Proven success in business development and client relationship management.
\n
• Established network within the architecture, engineering, construction, owner, or facilities sectors.
\n
• Experience growing teams, mentoring staff, and developing business operations.
\n

Technical Qualifications

\n
• Active commissioning certification such as CxA, CCP, CxM, BCxP, or equivalent.
\n
• Strong understanding of HVAC, electrical, controls, building automation, plumbing, life-safety, security, and other building systems.
\n
• Experience analyzing system performance data and troubleshooting operational issues.
\n
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
\n
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and related business software.
\n

• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
\n
• Ability to lift, climb ladders, access rooftops, and navigate active construction sites or operating facilities.
