Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Job Description

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.


Apple Valley Animal Hospital has all the toys! Digital HD radiographs, ultrasound, cold laser therapy... we can even offer on-site PRP treatments and stem cell therapy to our patients.


Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.


Most externships at experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.

We are looking for a full or part-time veterinarian to join our team in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. An externship at Apple Valley would be a wonderful opportunity for a working interview. We would love to mentor you here!


We are very serious about our work-life balance. We have an emergency hospital in town so we can close at noon on Saturdays and we are closed on Sundays. There are no late nights or on-call hours and lunch breaks are scheduled every day.
