Controls Technician

The Controls Technician will install, program, commission and maintain building automation and HVAC control systems for commercial properties. This role focuses on ensuring reliable, energy-efficient operation of BAS and HVAC controls through troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and timely service response, while working closely with project engineers, service teams and customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, wire and commission building automation systems (BAS) and HVAC control equipment in commercial buildings.
• Program and configure controllers, supervisory software and field devices using industry protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus).
• Troubleshoot and repair controls, sensors, actuators, VFDs and related HVAC control components both remotely and on-site.
• Perform preventive maintenance, system testing and commissioning to ensure optimal system performance and energy efficiency.
• Respond to service calls, diagnose issues, provide timely corrective actions and document service activities.
• Integrate BAS with third-party systems and perform software updates and backup configuration files.
• Interpret electrical schematics, control drawings and sequence of operations; maintain accurate project documentation.
• Provide technical support and training to building operators and clients on system operation and best practices.
• Adhere to safety protocols, company policies and applicable codes while working on commercial sites.
• Collaborate with electricians, HVAC technicians and project managers to complete installations and service projects on schedule.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical diploma or certification in HVAC controls, electrical or related field preferred.
• 2+ years of hands-on experience with building automation systems (BAS), HVAC controls or as a service technician in commercial settings.
• Experience with commercial building automation, BAS platforms, HVAC control equipment and common protocols (BACnet, Modbus, etc.).
• Strong troubleshooting skills for controls, sensors, actuators, and VFDs; able to use multimeters, megohmmeters and diagnostic tools.
• Familiarity with HVAC systems and sequences of operation; understanding of energy management principles.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customer sites; willingness to be on-call for emergency service as needed.
• Good communication and customer service skills; able to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
• Physical ability to climb ladders, work in mechanical rooms and lift equipment; able to work safely in commercial building environments.
• Relevant certifications a plus (EPA 608, NATE, manufacturer BAS certifications, OSHA 10/30).
• Ability to read electrical schematics, control wiring diagrams and maintain accurate service records.
