Clinical Nurse Coordinator NICU

St. David's Medical Center, a full-service hospital in central Austin and part of St. David's HealthCare, is seeking an experienced Clinical Nurse Coordinator for our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). In this leadership-focused clinical role, you will coordinate and provide high-quality, family-centered nursing care to critically ill and premature newborns while supporting the day-to-day operations of a state-of-the-art unit. Guided by St. David’s culture of compassionate, patient-centered practice, you will serve as a clinical resource and role model for bedside nurses, ensuring adherence to evidence-based standards, regulatory requirements, and hospital policies.

The Clinical Nurse Coordinator NICU will oversee patient flow, assist with staffing assignments and workload distribution, and collaborate closely with neonatologists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized plans of care. You will participate in admission, transfer, and discharge planning, monitor changes in patient conditions, and intervene promptly to support optimal clinical outcomes. This position includes responsibility for mentoring and precepting new nurses, supporting ongoing staff education and competency development, and promoting a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and teamwork.

In this role, you will help lead quality and performance improvement initiatives specific to neonatal intensive care, including infection prevention, medication safety, skin integrity, developmental care, and family engagement measures. You will support the implementation of evidence-based protocols, participate in audits and data collection, and collaborate with leadership to address opportunities for improvement in clinical practice and patient experience. The Clinical Nurse Coordinator NICU will also assist with policy development and review, ensuring compliance with hospital, state, and national standards of neonatal care.

As a visible nursing leader on the unit, you will provide direct patient care as needed, demonstrate advanced assessment and critical thinking skills, and serve as a resource in high-acuity or emergency situations such as neonatal resuscitation and rapid response events. You will communicate effectively with families, offering education and emotional support as they navigate the NICU experience, and facilitate family involvement in care and decision-making. You will model professional behavior, support conflict resolution, and foster strong collaboration among nursing, medical staff, and ancillary departments.
