Research Finance Specialist (Remote Opportunity)

About Stanford Nephrology The Division of Nephrology, part of the Department of Medicine at Stanford, focuses on research, education, and patient care. It supports the understanding and treatment of kidney disease locally and internationally, and it provides opportunities for professional development across the Department, School, and University. What You’ll Do Under the supervision of the Division’s Finance Manager, you will perform moderately complex accounting activities for a portfolio of research awards. Your tasks will include financial transaction approvals, expenditure reconciliation, revenue reporting, salary distribution, and journal entries. You will regularly engage faculty and research staff to monitor active awards and plan future proposals, while navigating changing priorities with discretion and sensitivity. Duties Include Analyze accounting transactions and information to summarize the financial position of the unit. Track and report revenue and expenses, determining appropriate procedures for record preparation and transaction research. Collect data, perform research on transaction details, and generate quantitative and qualitative analyses relative to budgets. Maintain and review accounting process controls, recommend modifications, and develop procedure documentation. Run and analyze financial reports from multiple systems and prepare management reports. Contribute to unit strategy, participate in change management, and support new initiatives. Analyze existing systems, define requirements, develop and implement complex test cases, and analyze results. Serve as a resource to resolve accounting-related issues across local units and departments. May lead, train, coach, and review the work of other staff as needed. Desired Qualifications Excel proficiency. Experience managing sponsored research at Stanford or another academic institution. Proficiency with Stanford data systems (e.g., OBI, SeRA, Oracle). Ability to review or manage a project with understanding of its overall scope and goals. Education & Experience (required) Bachelor’s degree plus four years of applicable experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (required) Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office with advanced Excel skills. Knowledge of accounting systems and the internet; computer literacy. Understanding and application of accounting skills and concepts. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Excellent communication skills, including clear written and verbal communication to internal audiences and client groups. Project management skills and the ability to contribute as part of a team. Certifications & Licenses None Physical Requirements Perform desk‑based computer tasks. Sit, sort, file paperwork, and use fine manipulation; lift, carry, push or pull objects weighing 10 pounds or less. Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat. Rarely stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders and use a telephone. Working Conditions May work extended hours during peak business cycles. Compliance: Follow all applicable University policies and procedures. Pay Within the 10 Bay Area counties: $110,307 to $128,195 per annum. All other Zones: $66,184 to $116,014 per annum.
