Upon completing the police academy and field training, the candidate will receive SLE 0002 / Step 9, $71,342/year. Location of Position Maryland Capitol Police Department – Baltimore City (301 W. Preston Street) and Annapolis (29 St. Johns Street). Main Purpose The Maryland Capitol Police Candidate Trainee position is the entry‑level law‑enforcement role within the Maryland Capitol Police. Employees in this classification attend a Police Training Academy to learn how to enforce local, state, and federal laws and departmental rules and regulations. Trainees must pass the entrance‑level police training course required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. Position Duties Role – An entry‑level law‑enforcement position focused on learning to enforce laws and ensure public safety. Trainees work under close supervision and may be assigned various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with potential call‑ins and overtime work. The role progresses as follows: Trainee – Learns under close supervision. Officer I – Works under close or general supervision. Officer II – Performs full duties under general supervision. Employees may be assigned to a rotating or fixed shift basis and are subject to call‑to‑duty in emergencies. The position requires frequent walking, standing, operating vehicles and firearms, and exposure to hazardous conditions such as adverse weather and encounters with armed individuals. Minimum Qualifications Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or high‑school equivalency certificate. Experience: None. Note: The educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3‑207. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Successfully complete the entrance‑level police training course during the probationary period. Secure a Police Officer certification during the probationary period. Possibly obtain a special police commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3‑209. Special Requirements Selection standards established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. U.S. citizenship. At least 21 years of age. Satisfactory background investigation and criminal history check. Oral interview. Physical and psychological examinations, truth verification, and drug test. Valid driver’s license in Maryland. Provision of a phone number for call‑in duty. Potential bearing of firearms and periodic proficiency demonstration. Selection Process Initial contact to confirm interest and qualifications. Fitness testing: 1.5‑mile run (17 min), 27 sit‑ups in 1 min, barrier climb, 18 push‑ups in 1 min, 150 lb. weight drag/pull (15 ft), sit and reach (16.5 in.), stair climb. Oral board interview. Conditional offer and provisional job offer. Background interview and investigation. Computer voice stress analysis. Application review. Screenings: psychological test, physical exam, drug screening.
