Key Requirements Welding experience is required. Industrial and commercial construction experience preferred. Candidates must have proven experience performing Stick Arc Welding (SMAW) and be able to weld structural steel in industrial and commercial construction environments. Experience with MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) welding is a plus. Job Summary Position responsible for performing a wide variety of skilled construction activities in such areas as concrete, structural steel erection, welding, millwrighting, and carpentry. Incumbents may serve as a lead to Construction Workers or Laborers in the absence of a Job Foreman or Job Superintendent. The Skilled Construction Worker is the third level of an eight-level construction series. The Skilled Construction Worker is distinguished from the Construction Worker by the skill and experience level required to perform tasks in three specialized trade areas. The Skilled Construction Worker is distinguished from the Job Foreman which has responsibility for coordinating tasks within a project and serving as a lead to construction crews. Supervisory Responsibilities None Duties and Responsibilities Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans for material requirements and dimensions; prepare layouts, mark cutting and assembly lines on materials. Shape materials to prescribed measurements; assemble cut and shaped materials and fasten them with appropriate tools; verify trueness with layout tools; erect framework and lay sub flooring. Build stairs and install partitions and cabinet work. Fit and install prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, weather stripping, trim, and finish hardware. Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level. Certified welders should be able to read weld symbols and identify a weld that meets specifications, understand maintenance and calibration of welding machines, and handle welding materials and gases properly. Level concrete to specified depth and consistency, using hand‑held screed and floats; smooth and shape freshly poured concrete using straight edge, float or power screed. Finish or repair concrete surfaces to specified finish; may specialize in steps and stairways or break up and repair old concrete surfaces. Align material to specified connections; verify vertical and horizontal alignment of materials. Qualified in rigging & hoisting of materials. Perform millwright duties by reading blueprints and schematic drawings to determine equipment layout; dismantle machines, move machinery and equipment using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks; assemble and install equipment such as shafting, conveyors, and tram rails. Serve as a lead to Laborers, Construction Workers, and other Skilled Construction Workers by monitoring and assigning work in the absence of a Foreman or Superintendent. Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed; bring problems to the attention of the Superintendent, Field Safety Coordinator or HR Manager. Perform additional duties as assigned to support project and organizational success. Knowledge and Experience Equipment uses and practices. Work zone safety and OSHA job site regulations. Skilled craft techniques (concrete, steel, carpentry, millwright). Hand and power tool operation. Company personnel policies. City, state, and federal laws. Required Skills and Abilities Reading blueprints, specifications, engineering plans. Coordinating tasks and/or projects. Operating hand and power tools. Performing craftwork in area of expertise. Operating heavy equipment such as backhoes, end loaders, power tools and all trucks. Problem solving. Communication and interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, and the general public; capable of exchanging and receiving information and work direction. Valid Driver’s License preferred. Education / Experience High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Or four years of construction-related experience specializing in two or more trades. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties. Physical Requirements Frequent physical activity: climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, and using hands. Work may involve exposure to mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, dust, chemicals, oils, harsh weather, poor lighting, tight spaces, and loud noise.
